For the people bashing the OP - IMO the only person with a moral responsibilty to pay for this bill is the **** who hit it with a car. They caused the injury, they are the ones with the responsibility to care for it.
I would argue the cat caused the injury by getting in the way of the car. It is likely they didnt see it at all which is fair enough. Its a cat. They are small. So saying the **** who hit it is a bit harsh.

Dont pay it untill you get the vet to realise you are not responsible. And forget all the nancy boys in here with their uptight ethics codes for the net.

Why is it the drivers fault he ran over a cat? They are small and they might not even see it? Why should they pay? If i hit a cat there is no way i would pay for anything its the owners fault its out on the road.

not on about that. the fact you say they arent really pets. they just get food from people.. my cats dont "just get food from me"

No but I know people with cats and they just go off on there own all the time, and don't seem too interested in there owners. I could have just seen rubbish cats your might be completely different.

ye thats fair enough.. But thats the same with any animal, if you dont interact with them then you wont bond with them..

The cat should not have been on the road.

I feel for the op, a loss of any family pet is always a very distressing time. My thoughts are with you. Be grateful a nice neighbour and a professional vet did all they could so it did not suffer a lonely long painful death.

However people need to learn to take responsibility for animals more, if you live in a place where cars roam about, then let your cat go play with the traffic what do you expect.

Giving a cat a cosy bed, loving strokes, and succulent kitikat is not where the responsibility ends. Cats dont understand cars kill, you do.

Thats what i was trying to say, it just didnt come out very well! :p

I would sincerely hope that despite your selfishness my local vets would still go out of their way to save one of my pets should it be taken to the vet without my knowledge. Although if all they get for their effort is a smack in the face then I don't fancy our chances :(
Totally agree with the whole of this post.

Several options;

1.Say the cat went missing months ago.
2.Say you buried the cat last year.
3.Say you found the cat in the road, but thought it was a write off, so you left it.
4.Ask for video evidence of the actions taken to try and save it.

Moral of the story, don't microchip your pets.

It's a defined legal principal with plenty of case law.... but I shall stop banging my head against a wall.

If anyone who's studied contract law for longer than me would care to tell me exactly why I'm wrong, I'd be grateful. I could well be - I'd just like to know why.

Paging Raymond Lin...

you obviously have no concept of a cats free spirit as keeping a cat indoors when it likes to go outside to me is akin to battery hens (for eggs) vs free range hens for food in that the battery hen may well live longer but which chicken has the better quality of life?

More like he thinks you shouldn't keep pets that you can't control. If keeping cats indoors is cruel then don't buy one, better than letting it roam all over the place to get knocked down.

I agree. And they come into other peoples gardens and eat the wild birds and leave intestines etc. Its horrible. A cat ate my guinea pig before too. You should control your pet.
