You're not comparing like with like. You've got ADSL with one modem, and ADSL2+ with a different modem.

On the other hand, ADSL2+ should work perfectly fine with a modem that only does ADSL, but AIUI the "upgrades" Demon have done include a move to the Clueless & Witless LLU network so it's possible they've done something weird with the configuration at their end.

That "should be able to do 3Mbps" is an estimate. It's by no means exact.

I am in the same boat and I am using the same router DrayTek 2820Vn that support both.

I with Plusnet and just moved over to the ADSL2+ Trial.

Before upgrading, I was getting.

Down Load Speed of 2794kbps and Upload Speed of 293kbps

Since upgraded to ADSL2+ I now getting
Down load speed of 1379kbps and Upload speed of 612kbps.

I have just asked plusnet the question why my download speed has halved.

Hi Op

Surely this a combined issue that the customer needs a better ISP (e.g. Be) and the best damn modem they can afford!! Intertex, or Billion would be the makes to go for if you are a long way from an exchange.

For example I sync'd 15Mb/1Mb (O2) with a Billion router and 12Mb/1Mb with the O2 supplied Netgear router (which is pretty decent I might add). I am only 2km from my local exchange - yet even at this distance a good modem will pull ahead.

Belkin make good Bluetooth dongles, not such good modems however... :D

Theres always trade off with adsl2+ on long lines higher upstream annex means smaller downstream annex. a lot of supposed adsl2+ routers are terrible tbh, clearly demonstrated with that belkin. Netgear produce good results and the 585's are not bad.

And, yes i see a lot of adsl customers get poor speeds with adsl2+, however they should have adsl profiles available that they can switch you back too. If they will not - migrate

So long as you're on Annex A, you shouldn't get any worse than you got on ADSL2+.

What $anch3z is thinking of is Annex M (which you're very unlikely to be on), where you steal from the downstream to have a higher upstream (~2.5Mbps on an extremely short line).

ADSL2+ can be quite problematical on any lines which cant support ADSL sync rates of 4Mbps or higher.

It uses considerably higher frequency bands than ADSL and on longer lines these bands are normal unusable.

There can be instances where long lines do work better on ADSL2+, but these are the exceptions rather than the rule, and generally this only happens when there is inducted noise on the lower frequency bands, yet the higher frequencies are clean.

Of course on very short lines ADSL2+ is fantastic. I sync up at just over 24meg, and get an IP profile of 21 meg. (When the ads say up to 20 meg, on the shortest line it is actually up to 21meg, just really unusual)

I also get 1.3meg upstream sync :)

Im surprised that Demon would configure their kit not to work in ADSL mode! Its great to have ADSL2, and 2+ enabled, so the end user has a choice. but not as a replacement for ADSL. Being able to reconfigure the router to swap between ADSL, ADSL2 and ADSL2+ is the best scenario, so that the end user can pick what is best on their particular line!.
