a hardwired and professionally installed extension is always going to be better quality and less susceptible to being moved/kicked/kinked etc.

Saying that, it's always best to keep the modem as close to the master socket as possible and run CAT5 around the house.
 
adding new sockets is dead easy, took me like 10 minutes to fit one, all you need is some cable, a screwdriver, a tool for pushing the wires into the master socket, and a socket. So long as you are not colour blind you will be fine ;)
 
Only thing I can think of off the top of mi head is that it MIGHT be possible to buy better grade cable for the extension (as in something thats semi-shielded at least) :)

Avoid extensions wherever possible tho - sooner it hits the router the better.
