you shouldnt need an app, there should be a function button on your keyboard, usually blue writing *FUNC* and another key with a screen on it, hold the FUNC button and press the screen button, possibly one of the F keys

what make/model is the lappy?
 
if my laptop is plugged in and i close the lid the screen just goes off


if it isnt plugged in and i close the lid it goes into stand by to save my battery

all done in power settings that i am sure your laptop will have
 
what make laptop do you have? different brands have different hotkeys to turn off the display, for example, ibm/lenovo's its FN+F3
