Don't understand the negative comments about Birmingham. Maybe it's because I'm a student, but it's a nice enough city. Not so keen on the areas around it, Aston etc are a dump, but the city centre is good, plenty to do.

My anti brum comments are mainly based on initial reception. The majourity of peoples first experiance of Birmingham is New Street (New Street is one of the majour transport hubs of the UK, after Waterloo, Paddington and Manchester Picadilly). When you arrive you wish you where ANYWHERE else. It is 100% a **** hole.

The center isn't bad the NEC is worth a visit. But brum lacks an indentity in the way London, Manchester and Liverpool have.

Personally I live in Bristol, and I'm not the biggest fan of it. But at least it has some sort of indentity, it doesn't feel like an overgrown car park like Brum.

No offense to those from Birmingham, I think the people are great, but the city itself is horrid alsmost like an large version of Salford.

So you mean New Street Station not New Street, that's a little different! New Street Station is a complete Dive! Can't wait for that place to get redone. Long overdue.

Are there plans to redo the station? As i agree with all here the place makes you want to commit suicide :(

There are plans, but I don't know if anything has ever been 100% set in stone yet. It's well overdue though, as next to the bull ring, it's even more horrid.

Sorry fella yes I mean New Street Station. Honestly in total I must have spent about a month in there one way or the other. Anything from the South East or London o the North tends to go through there.

If you travel the South-North often you'll find that New Street Station is often a change point, I know pretty much every croos country Virgin service goes though New Street (they normally change staff over there).

Like I say I dont like Brum in general, but as a reception to your city, New Street Station is a bad as it gets. No station in the country (majour station) is as bad. Birmingham feels like a big city lacking any redevelopment, IMO Manchester is certainly the UK's second city, and thanks to a really good last five years feels like a great place to be. In terms of train station, Picadilly is fantastic.

But my point on identity is important, Manchester and Liverpool and to be fair Bristol have a sense of meaning, Birmingham just seems to be there becuase it's between the north and the south.

It's ashame because I think we a bit of money it could be lovely place, and like I say the people tend to be top notch.

Go take a look at Omega Sektor on corporation street. Is a LAN center but big, well equipped and is generally a pleasure to go to. Don't have to pay to look around, can sit around and chat and have a drink (got a bar) etc...

No I don't work for them :P.

AFAIK they're doing something about New Street Station. Read in the papers they had something silly like a £550m budget to get refurbs sorted out. But I do agree, the station is an absolute craphole.

Yeah but MANY of us have heard this before, and it never happens.

I'd LOVE to see New Street be improved. But it's a big task. It's the one national stations they KNOW will take a LOT of effort to improve, and as such they probably wont.

I can see it remaining the same for 10 years! It's just such a nightmare it's actually quite funny. It is the transit point for SO many trains, why on earth they upgraded Manc Picadilly before New Street is confusing!

Problem with Birmingham is that it's plagued by mediocrity. Sure it has it's fair share of s**holes, but how many major cities do not? It's just incredibly depressing.

I dunno, I find Birmingham to be quite nice in comparison with some other cities. There's a lot of stuff to do, and quite a number of different places to go. I'll agree with it looking dirty and depressing, but over the past 5-10 years, it's changed quite a lot.

I just wish there weren't so many chavs/asian rudeboys about.

When I was there my girlfriend bought me a tortilla from a take-away joint ocuk reccomended. I was later informed that the tortilla-stand in question was owned by a nearby "gentlemen's club".

Therefore, my girlfriend TECHNICALLY took me to a strip-joint! How many guys can claim that, eh? :D Giving me the opportunity to boast about that is something that I shall always be grateful to the City of Birmingham for!:p

Ah yes the infamous Rocket Club. The tortilla's outside are legendary! Bit expensive mind, but legendary nontheless!

hmm, i think many people where are making assumptions about birmingham that are not true.

brum is going through a massive regeneration,

the bham revelepment scheme shows you just how much is planned to change, including a redevelopment of new street.

i'n not going to bang on about bham, i think its great, big enough to have some good attractions, not so big things are too far away...

Brindley place and the canal side bars throughout the city are great. Compared to how the canals were say 15 years ago, the regeneration is miraculous.

There's an Imax in B'ham, which if you've not been to one, is recommended.
