Indeed it's an area I am looking to do a masters degree to gain more knowledge in this area - look up Forensic Computing.

You can do it as an officer or civilian, as it's computer forensics, which in the same way as normal forensics is a mixed job - though I think you will need a degree to get into it without being a police officer (possibly will need a degree as an officer as well!)
It's becoming more and more a civilianised role so you don't necessarily need to be a police officer to do it (indeed down here it would pretty much rule you out). I managed to get in without a degree at all, but it would probably help your cause if you had one.
most IT forensics work is contracted to firms specialising in IT security and the like, and not actually done by the police themselves. KPMG have a department that do this, for example. (My Sister works in said department.)

I know someone who used to do this. It really is incredibly dull work.
Not sure about private sector work, but in the public sector it's quite interesting. There's always something new to do or learn.
Also most forces do do their own forensic work - some contract out some of it, but a lot is done in-house. Still if you really want to get working in the field, get a job wherever you can. You can transfer around when you're trained.
