The question is...why does he want to trade after spending £300 to 'sort' the engine, and a further £300 and a car for your golf?

222k would put me off a little, but I have seen cars still going at 300k!

keep the golf, that's high mileage for a silly little 4 pot beemer, as its a compact I doubt it's been a fleet car or motorway cruiser.

Its not just the engine you have got to look at at that mileage.
The suspension, clutch, etc are going to be other parts that will require work in the not too distant future.
I'd stick with the golf myself

its not that high, my golf should be there within a year i recon

222k is high for a car with a small engine and it probably wont be motorway miles either with it being a compact. Unless it had a FULL service history from the day it was born I would not get rid of a MK3 GTI with only 82k on the clock.

Ugly slow pos. Why on earth would you want to swap :(
He's probably just realised after spending 300 nicker on ther monstosity that it'll need another small fortune spent on it soon and is trying to fob it off on you.
