Your nearest modern equivalent to SOR and GA for single player would be a game like Ninja Gaiden imo (I can only vouch for the original as I have not played part 2), or the next game due for release by the Ninja Gaiden creator (who has left the studio responsible for the franchise).

I know it might not seem so at first but Ninja Gaiden imo is the perfection of the beat-em-up genre that SOR is also a part of, and combines the same elements (graphics, sound, fight engine) to make a spectacular experience.

If you are looking for a remake of the original SOR, check this: http://www.bombergames.net/sorr_project/ - its quite a swish update and retains the 2D feel.

Did anyone else play Streets of Rage 3 and think it was terrible? :(

The first two are awesome though.

Was really let down by Part 3. Check out the remake I posted above - its quite the thing :)

IIRC Streets of Rage was the first (or if not certainly one of the first) 16MB Megadrive games.
Great game. 2 player mode was ace. Double Dragon was good too! Ah great days :)

Is Oblivion modern GoldenAxe?

Side scrolling beat-em-ups as a genre just sort of died. There isn't really a modern equivalent. The closest I can get is that Tekken games used to have a mode where it effectively became a side scrolling fighting game where you took on hundreds of very weak enemies. Last one I saw was in Tekken 3 though and that's ten years old!

Oh wow :D

I might be being a bit dense here but I can't find a download link on that page. :)

You can't really do Streets of Rage on modern systems, some have tried but the essential gameplay is lost in the translation to 3D. It's a timeless classic.
