I don't see why the host would mind if you have your own server really - we have clients who send vast amounts. Apart from the spam complaints which come back but that's automated dismissal ;)

Are you being realistic about your email expectations? I run a mailserver on behalf of about 20 companies. Most months it sends around 200,000 emails. Obviously YMMV, but 500,000 is a ridiculous amount of email - especially for a startup company.

Most cloud hosting providers will have rules in place regarding the amount of e-mails your server can send. This is done to protect the host from having IP addresses blocked which will end up causing issues for other customers.

Anyone who has ever tried send mail from EU EC2 servers to universities has likely come up against this problem.

You need to be very careful when choosing a host if you plan to do your own mailing.

In terms of special requirements from a hardware perspective, no not really, just a normal server properly set up

^ The best way to avoid the above is to make sure your host provides you a block of IPs for your use only. HostIT, the company I mentioned above provide 10 IPs with their basic dedicated server package IIRC.
