Nice copy and paste ;)

The point being made isn't one about mixing fully-synth and semi-synth, it's with regards to the formulation of one brand vs the other.

It was but that was so it cannot be false info.

Brand does not matter in the real world. unless your tracking your car or using high performance parts then theres no need to worry.

Granted people may say it's not reccomended but if you were in competition with cheaper the brands im sure you'd say this too.

Without information regarding the formulation of 5w30 Edge and Halfords own brand no-one can say what difference it will make to engine wear over the cars life.

I'd expect and like to think the formulation and extended engine running and bench testing of Edge far exceeds that of the cheaper generic off the shelf formulations.

In the realword one product is slightly more expensive than the other, if you really want to see the difference in performance go google some of the independent lab results.

i always found mobil oil's to be the best, the engine always seemed to be much quieter/smother on cold starts compaired to castrol. If its got castrol in it and your topping it up stick to castrol but if you were doing a full change then the halfords brand will be fine. I find its best to try and use the same brands when topping up tbh

Jesus titty christ.

Mate, it's an engine, it wants 5w30.

A little bit of extra Boron or less Molybdenum is not gonna make a whopping piston slapping, engine crunching difference.

It wants some 5w30 engine oil, also it's wants all of 1 litre of it anyway.

This is exactly what I mean by people just being plain silly. Serious scaremongering is utterly serious.

5w30 rules, engine oil, lawnmower oil, pressure washer oil :D

Do you think halfords go and 'make' their own oil, or they just re-bottle someones elses?

So do you think all 5w30 engine oil is created equal?

No.

No, but I do think topping up a litre in an engine, then mixing brands is an utterly non issue.

The issue arrives when mixing spec approved oils.

Like in a LT71141 transmission. There is a difference between LT71141 oil and LT71141 spec oil. Mixing that in a tranmission is dangerous due to different frictional properties that can cause frothing.

That happening in an engine....no.

If you put the correct grade etc and the correct engine approved spec you will be 100% utterly futterly fine.

Take you silly scaremongering elsewhere.

Why pay a premium for 4ltrs of 5w30 edge then stick a home brand in with a different formula, it totally defeats the purpose of buying the more expensive stuff in the first place.

I also love people who say, 'i put in 4ltrs of xx cheap brand semi synth and my cars running fire', as if 30 seconds of running is enough to quantify the extra friction and engine wear attributed to a cheaper oil.

FYI the approved spec is a minimum specification ;)

I simply wanted you to qualify your 'too much fuss is made out of oil' comment with actual fact and proper opinion.

As you’ve correctly stated mixing semi and fully synth of the same viscosity / brands isn't really an issue, however it's less than ideal.

The degradation and increased wear a poor performing oil can do an engines longevity is quite pronounced, however the issue isn’t noticeable to the end user until it’s too late, and thats the problem, people treat it like all oils are effectively the same because they can’t see an immediate difference.

Engine lubrication engineering is BIG business and a complex one at that.

It is fine to mix brands of the same type

For example, mix Halford's own 10W/40 semi-synthetic with Castrol 10W/40 semi-synthetic. I wouldn't mix oil grades, or mix different levels of man-made-ness (I know I just made that up :p).

We are talking about a 2.5 v6 Mondeo here, not a 9,000rpm Honda engine!
