Why no golf?

Driven the beemer, tis nice but the maintenance isn't cheap. Their deisel engine is truly superb mind.

Ant

Hmm, from looking at your list have you considered...

Honda Civic
Seat Leon
Audi A3
Vauxhall Astra
Renault Megane
Skoda Fabia/Octavia

Surely the Skoda, Seat and Audi are basically a Golf (not driven them so asking)

They are underneath but might be worth a look still, depending of course on what bothered you about the Golf.

To be fair, given what you've discounted I think most on here are going to struggle to suggest anything you'd like?

Whats your budget and how many miles do you do? are you into fast cars or do you just want something nice to drive around it?

If your into cars and don't do too many miles I would recommend the 135i, if you do a lot of miles then the 123d would not be bad at all (in coupe format)

As others have said the Scirocco is very nice. I know its not really a hatchback but what about the new TT?

Aren't the 135 and TT coupes with no hatchback though, I need a hatch and boot big enough for the dog.

What dog do you have? Are we talking chiwawa or Saint Bernard...

If it's the latter then it ain't gonna fit in the back of a 1 series hatchback

ok so you really do need a hatchback so the 135i is out. The TT may be a little small in the back for a dog but its worth going to have a look, same with the Scirocco.

I would look at a 2.0T A3 or S3 if you don't mind a little higher running cost.

Or what about a Lexus CT200h,

its a little over budget but you may be able to get the dealers down 1 or 2k as Its probably quite hard to sell a 20k hatchback at the moment.
Its not my cup of tea but its a little different, it will probably depreciate like a stone.

18k is a lot of money to spend on a a small hatchback for that sort of money I would want something that feels special. 10k will get you a nice enough golf.
