GPUs can safely run much hotter than CPUs. Could it be something else? Is anything overclocked on your system? Do the CTD/BSOD only occur under load, thus implying faulty rail(s) on PSU? Which PSU have you got? Is your RAM securely seated and stable? Could try memtest to rule out faulty stick?
