Brit Journalist Dies In Misratah RPG Attack
The Oscar-nominated photojournalist is reported to have been killed by mortar fire in the city of Misratah.

He had been covering fighting between Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's forces and Libyan rebels.

He was killed in the only opposition-held city in western Libya, which has come under weeks of relentless shelling by government troops.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We are offering consular assistance to the family."

Mr Hetherington, who is reported to have recently married, wrote on his Twitter profile last night, saying: "In besieged Libyan city of Misrata. Indiscriminate shelling by Qaddafi forces. No sign of Nato."

Mr Hetherington, 41, who was born in Liverpool and studied Literature at Oxford University, was a contributing photographer for Vanity Fair magazine.

Three other journalists were also hit in an RPG attack, according to the magazine's website.

Mr Hetherington, who had dual British and American nationality, was best known for his work in Afghanistan, and won the World Press Photo of the Year Award in 2007.

^^ Very sad.
I dont get why Nato arent bombing the forces around Misrata as they are attacking civilians in that city, it would be valid to neutralise that threat under the UN resolution ?

they arent attacking civilians in that city less than 3% of the injured in miserata are female look at the video someone posted recently, if they were shelling civilians areas with no concern for civilian life how do you explain the low injury rate for females? 97% of the city are male? lol..... dont even try
i supose the rebel mortars are smart weapons that can distinguish between pro gaddafi troops and civilians, must be very hi tech.......

the reporter also knows the risks of going into a warzone to capture photos of the fighting, no doubt the west will put a spin on it though

There is no oil or oil infrastructure there.

Good point, this is all about the oil because before all this kicked off....

...oh, Gaddafi had contracts with our oil majors and was happily selling us oil?

If this was all about the oil the best thing to do would have been to side with Gadaffi.

This is presumably why China and Russia are anti the current action - China hardly cares about human rights, but if they see Gadaffi was the likely winner, they'll want the oil contracts he now surely wont award to Western companies...

So what is it about then, it clearly isn't a humanitarian mission.

It's a 'get rid of the tyrant who thinks the best response to the people wanting democracy is to fire at them' mission. Now whether or not we are right to intervene - I really dont think we are - I don't doubt the intentions are honourable.

Trouble is, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

What about the tyrants in Bahrain and Saudi then?

Statements don't correlate.

hes wasnt a journalist he was a photographer/film maker trying to capture photos/footage of the fighting when your traveling with the rebels your putting your self into harms way and can expect bullets and mortars to be heading towards your position.

if civilians were beeing targeted can you explain why only 3% of the injured in miserata are women?

No, but can you explain why bombing a city is not considered attacking civilians (regardless of if enemy forces are ther or not)?

Also, where has this 3% figure come from other than the video posted above? Is this a verified FACT or more propoganda you're buying into? Do you see the paradox here? You're just as much chewing down the propoganda than anyone else.
