Wouldn't you still need to set up an account with them? Even if it is prepay.

no but your supposed to inform them your a new tenant so the statements are in your name.

they don't give you a new key either.

OP could try getting an elastic band and rubbing it along the contacts of the key they are probably dirty and the reader is struggling with it.

also seems to help if you slot them in fairly fast and straight on as possible when the key goes in.

oh its a necro thread, guy above could try the same though if the key contacts arent clean

tell them to rip that extortion meter out and put a normal one in. Pre pay are usually in place because they are trying to recover debt.

no they are usually in place because someone who once lived there had trouble paying and got in to debt.

wasn't there some eu ruling stopping them being extortionate and out of line with regular customers anyway?

Sorry to to resurrect this thread but I have a B2 error when inserting the key and it won't top up when I take it to the shop, I suspect its the key but weirdly the key is Southern Electric yet the Meter is EDF. So the question is who do I contact about getting a new key ?

I'd say EDF would be the best first port of call.

exactly, so when that "someone" moves out, the new tenant should not be lumbered with that millstone of having to use pre-pay.

What EU rulings may be in place are clearly being ignored by the big 6

Figures released today show those with the meters pay an extra £226 a year on their energy bills compared to those paying the cheapest direct debit tariff.

Liverpool Wavertree MP, Luciana Berger has now called for action from the government and the big six energy companies, after it emerged that thousands of households across the city are paying “extortionate” prices.

The best way to save on energy bills is to switch to a standard meter. But this is not open to everyone as most companies will carry out credit checks, and some charge for the switch.

and thats just in liverpool and was only reported just over a 2 months ago.

It's basically punitively punishing someone for being "poor" / less wealthy than others and literally hamstringing them for the basic energy need. It is no wonder so many people die from the cold in winter if they can;t even put the heating on because they are short. For what is supposed to be a "first world" country it's an outright disgrace.

Southern Electric tariffs are the same pre pay and monthly last we checked.

We got our landlords permission to change it (now for a second time to a smart meter) as prefer the convenience of not having to run down the shop before your freezer defrosts :D

pull the big fuse out, and bypass the meter, then plug in the fuse again, thats what I would do If I had a pre pay meter and it was playing up leaving me in the dark,

but I am an electrician ;-)

How do you explain the missing or broken seals the next time your meters are read? Or do you have those too?

I have the seals, but I wouldnt re seal it, Iwould tell them exactly what I had done in order to regain power, then let them come apply the seals

Had you recently topped the key up? B2 (or D2) means the top up hasn't been applied properly, making another small top up clears the error and applies the credit 99% of the time :)
