when i reinstalled xp on my pc i created a 2 partitions, c and f and i put xp on c. the version wasn't "correct" so i installed another version of xp on partition f and have got that working perfectly been installing drivers software etc. Now i want to delete partition C as i no longer need it however its not letting me as its telling me that that partition has windows file on it.

so anyway i can delete this partition?

[edit]

i just had a quick look to see whats currently using the C partition using unlocker and its 3 processes of svchost.exe

you saying reinstall the windows i use now which is on F partition on the C partition? woudln't this mean starting again for everything like drivers, changes to windows etc?

Yup. :D

I'm being useless.

I can't see there being any way around it to be honest. The C partition has some stuff on it, even if you don't want it to.

Also all your data will be tied to the F partition, so you will not be able to change it to C, it'll mess up all of your programs and shortcuts.

The only other solution I can think of is to make an image of the F partition's install and then reformat/partition the HDD and put the image onto the new C drive.

Oh god, it gets more complicated. :p

Well I've never shurnk a partition before, that'd require shrinking one and increasing another...could be interesting to do, but not something I'd want to do.

I have my system as follows;

C: - Windows
D: - Programs
E: - Data
F: - Data
G: - Data

The first three are on one drive, the other two are seperate drives. Now if I need more space on C: I don't steal it from E: whilst I have windows installed. I back up all my data that I need from E: and then reformat the drive and repartition. It's the easiest and cleanest way to do it.

ok i think im going to start again then so i can get everything how it should be.

so how would i go about doing this then as i need to get rid of the windows on partition C anyway for the other one to go there and then also windows on partition F.

what about all my programs on partition G? will they still be usable or will they no longer work as windows will be on C rather then f?

thanks

OK, list your partitions, and the drives they are on.

So like;

Drive one:
C:
D:
E:

Drive two:
F:
G:

etc.

What you'll want to do in the Windows partitioning screen of the installer is delete the partitions you don't want, and remake them whatever size you now require.

All your programs will become redundant when you reinstall, so you'll have to install them again. This is because they require files that they write to the system directory (be it C:, D: F: etc.).

If you have data you want, do not forget to back it up on DVD or external HDD.

C: crappy windows
D: dvd 1
E: dvd 2
F: good windows
G: games, programs, all that stuff etc

how do i get to the installer? just putting windows disc in and then i guess changing boot priority in bios?

luckily i got a laptop so will transfer anything i need now.

thanks

So you have one HDD with three partitions?

I'm intrigued as to why the DVD drives split the HDDs, but that doesn't actually matter.

Yes, all you do is pop the CD in and make sure that CV/DVD is firs boot priority.
