Dell 2007WFP on Sony Vaio FJ Series?

I'm considering purchasing a Dell 2007WFP and was wondering if it's possible to use this display as an external monitor for my Sony Vaio VGN-FJ3S/W (Technical Spec )

Will the external VGA port on the laptop be able to output at the native resolution of the monitor (1680 x 1050 Pixels)?

I emailed Sony with the same questions, and the answer back wasn't incredibly helpfully:

Please be advised that your computer has a VGA Monitor Out plug and that it is possible for you to connect an external monitor.
As seen the specifications, then the resolution of the screen is 1280x800 so it shouldbe the maximum that can offer your graphics card.

Can the VGA port only output to the laptop screen resolution or lower? Looking at the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 Technical Info it says the maximum resolution is 2048x1536 at 85 Hz.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
