Right mate has a dell 24" monitor and after a lot of faffing with the PC including a new 1100 watt tagan psu we have discoverd that it's actually the monitor causing the pc to shut down.
It's random but it seems that when the monitor goes into power down/standby mode it's causing the pc to shut down.
Also if the monitor is switched off the pc will idle all day no problems.
All power saving options in vista are turned off. Also it isn't the graphics card as we have tried two 9800gtx's and the fault appears on both.

The specs are asus crosshair 2 mobo. 8gb 1066 reaper ram...9800gtx...and some flashy pcie soundcard can't remember which one...and a phenom 2 quad core.
All this is running on vista 64 bit.
Anyone know what might be casuing this or put some ideas forward would be a great help? Anyone know what the pinout is on the plugs beacuse I suppose it could be a dodgy connection or something?
Thanks in advance.

Haven't been able to change the monitor yet....but it is a high end 24" dell not a cheapy.
Obviously signals travel from the monitor to pc and vice versa...I'm wondering if there is a short some where or a bent pin.At least it seems that this isn't a common fault :D
Thanks for the reply's

I think your next step should be to change the vga/dvi cable (if possible) as well as the power cable and if that doesn't help then change the monitor.

very little goes from the screen to the pc.. its virtually all PC to Monitor. As already noted, the screen will only go to standby if the PC instructs it to. The screen itself will only enter standby in two situations, 1) the computer sends a standby command via the vga or dvi cable, or if the PC powers off, and stops sending data or syncronisation signals.

Its an odd problem thats for sure.

mmmm...could be a myriad of things then? Well I'm going to inherit the screen anyways as he's getting a 27" dell...so if that doesn't cure it it must be the motherboard!!!!
