Why not go for the 2407 and with the saving buy the this the Hyundai VVuon Q320 32" HD Ready TV Including Freeview (MO-039-HY)
Don't be stupid, that's far too sensible for a student.

I really wonder why there's so much noise made about student debt...most of it's their own fault :p Better not say too much though, I haven't worked out what to do with my loan yet....:D

- The 24" DELLs have been around for longer - fewer quality issues

I dont believe the 2407 has been around as long - and as its a new panel inside its effectively a new monitor

I agree with the point of your post, but just wated to advise that I believe the 30" to have been around quite a few months longer

its all about the 30 inch guys, its just the right size, please can someone advise me if i could run a 30 inch at max res with the above spec...

thanks!!!

From personal past experience 30" is a bit big for desk viewing tbh.
Id say 21"-26" is more ideal for a full peripheral vision at a desk.

I query why any gamer would seriously want this display as its ALWAYS going to need the very best equipment, to get even close to running it at native. Lets face it why bother if running games less than native reduces the quality and also the very low contrast for such a size of monitor leaves a little to be desired. Ive seen reviews of this display and personally its overrated, and if anything much more suited to general desktop or semi professional usage than an all out gamers paradise display.

As for the price well £400 buys a decent spec 20"+ monitor and £1000 will buy you a very good 1280x720 High Def projector. Now gaming on either is fun but a huge 80"-100" screen with all details set to max and still good frames is also a much more satisfiying experience, but then thats me.

problem is i heard dell dont replace the monitor just for a dead pixel, i heard that it has to be a certain amount of dead/dodgy pixels before they replace it which would suck. can you imagine forking out that much money for a monitor and getting a dead pixel and then dell saying they dont cover dead/lazy pixels in their warrenty!!!

Whys this so often mentioned....
Its simple folks you return ANY product for ANY personal reason you wish, dont mention pixels as a reason as this is not seen as a option to return under (from many companies regards TFTs) simply return it under your consumer rights regards trading laws and the internet. State you simply dont like the product but ensure packaging is all kept as new for return shipping/collection.

Hello Mr Latte, its nice to see you posting again. I would love you to give me your MSN or post some pics in a link of your loft. On moving next year I will be looking at doing something very similar. Looking at the Panny AE900.

I too had the Medion 30" when you bought yours a few years ago, and used to chat on here on the AVforums. I have always admired and envied your knowledge about AV hardware but more so your loft set up.

Sorry to have gone off topic, having had the medion 30 LCD/monitor. I too found it a little imposing. I had a few problems and had to send mine back. I upgraded to the Dell 2405 and have been very happy with its purchase.

Edit: I did have some pics but lost them when I lost a hdd :(

Hi, currently no longer use msn, tbh free time is very limited lately too.

Not so involved regards all this being as compulsive "hobby/habbit" as it used to be for me but still pop in n out every so often.

You can PM me on avf "bad robot" as i spend a bit of time their too.
Will try n help you if i can regards any queries.

Hi, with my set up i will not be at a desk i will be sitting about a metre or 2 away from this screen, i just want a screen that is bigggg and very high quality for playing games such as world of warcraft. My original choice was to get a 50 inch h/d plasma tv or a 44 inch hd lcd tv, but i cant mount them on my wall as it is hollow, and il only want a higher resolution anyway seeing as i have a 7900gtx... anyone got any advice?

ahhh GOD ! why does this have to be such a hard decision!

30" or two 24"

...... i really cant decide now... i guess i could get the 30" and if not happy with it sell it or return it? and get 2 24"'s ?? is this possible?

For entertainment and your 1-2 metre position, then 30" is SMALL not big.
The high resolution isnt going to do you any favours regards the amount of upscaling that is required for video playback, including any wmv, divx, dvd or even hi def video content.

Do the math as even HD is going to be greatly scaled on this screen if viewed fullscreen and scaling reduces quality. Yes games that can be ran and still sustain 1:1 will look pretty sharp but its not going to be long before you require some major new hardware upgrades to continue to play at this level.

This display would however look fantastic with high res digital photos that even exceed this panels resolution but it is certainly not going to give much benifit from the distance you mention for general entertainment as even in gaming from a distance the additional higher resolution will not be as noticable as it would from a distance.

I wouldnt discount an LCD HDTV or Projector/Montior combination ran in dual view or as i used to do a lot combine the projector with dual monitors for a 3way display. Your wall may be a problem but you could use a narrow yet still suitable stand or some form of bookcase/av piece of furniture, me well i built my own for the loft.

This inspired quite a few people in the past :)

that is supper hot, what are those two tft's ???? and how much was your projector?

i have built myself a good looking study / pad (same colours as yours :D - but it was in mind of an office and not so much an entertainment room as yours, meaning i have a desk that goes almost all the way around my room and a couch at the back, but i dont really have room for a projector.. i mean... i guess i could.... but AHH! stop makeing this sooo hard! ********!!!

^_^

The 30" Dell is amazing.

Ive got two. Tbh people that are slagging them either dont have one and are just spouting, or busted their wallets to get one.

Tis true, the quality control was poor, but Dell are pretty good at swapping them out and letting you keep the original.....

The screen itself is jaw dropping, and lets be honest the native resolution is pretty workable for games, christ, even my 6600GT plays UT2003 perfectly fine.

I dont really play games , but fired it up to see what it was like, and I was very impressed.

In short, if you are seriously considering one GET IT!

There are deals going all the time. Mine cost me £899 all in, which was a steal, (not literally!!)

that is why i decided against a projector etc, because i want pure quality and be able to have a monitor for a couple of years untill i have to think about changing it again... seeing as the 30" dell has such a high res i figured this would be the way forward for me, to be honest im always moving my room round and sometimes extend my monitor into my bedroom to keep playing when im sleepy so i will most prob be sitting close enough to it to justify having such a high res monitor for gaming, then again i do have a big white wall in front of my couch which is tempting for a projector but then i wouldnt have such a high res... arrrggghhh this is painful :p

think he might of been the lucky guy who got it off ebay for that deal/steal/sale of the century... although now they are all back up to at least 1 thousand 2 houndread and odd...

It was special deal on the web (not ebay thankfully) , obviously cant mention where from.

But I didnt pay VAT cos I used that Goverment computer scheme thing.

I didnt pay tax or NI on it either as it was taken off my wages top line, so in reality it really cost around £650 odd.

I also sold my Sony FW900 for £624 so it was almost a straight swap!

I think it worked out pretty well !

Everyone will have different views, some just promote what they own, it happens all the time.

Id like to see someone run Oblivion/GTR2 and something like Crysis on one of these in native. Whats the point in purchasing it if you have to continue running below native. Im sure if you ask many 24" owners they too have the same problem.

The screen itself is jaw dropping, and lets be honest the native resolution is pretty workable for games, christ, even my 6600GT plays UT2003 perfectly fine.
Yeah thats a new game....
6600GT perfect for gaming you are having a laugh.

Whats so great about 30"?
I have a 40" Bravia which doesnt look to shabby that my sig PC is connected to and with its 8ms yet admitedly lower resolution id say that certain HDTVs would be a better option for gaming and combined with a laptop or other additional monitor for multitasking or an additional option. This then means you have a larger desktop too. I dont feel the need to go higher than a 1200 ish res for gaming but some people are res ho's.

Dont put down projectors, if calibrated well they can look very good but the whole point is the immerison such a large screen can give. Additional resolution is eye candy not extra immerision that a larger screen will give.
True PJs are perhaps more suited to platform, racing and general console games than FPS though.

30" is great becuase of the resolution.

You can do so much more.

Its great to use a PC monitor at close range and have such a large, super crisp desktop, and then be able to use the monitor as a TV for watching films etc from way back in bed or something similar......
