Good afternoon all,

I have just recently picked up a Mini 9 netbook (as you may guessed!) , am thinking of upgrading the 8Gb SSD drive to a 16 or 32Gb but am struggling to find UK stockists? I don't believe ocuk stocks these so I hope I am not asking people to break rules, if I am then please disregard.

Also can you recommend me a quick SD card, there appears to be different classes but I am not sure of the advantages/disadvantages etc. Also would I lose a great deal of performance using a mini-SD card via an SD adapter at all?

Cheers,

David

You need to look for a Mini PCI-E half height SSD. The only real place to get them is t'bay, search for Dell Mini SSD and you'll find STEC, Supertalent and Runcore drives from international sellers. Be careful, the ones that are advertised as for the EEE 90x and Dell Mini won't fit as they're too long. They're a bit pricey though, plus you have to take into consideration customs duty and VAT if you're buying from the USA or Hong Kong sellers, but there's a German seller that might be a better purchase.

Don't know anything about the performance of the Mini SD card, but if you're going to get an SDHC card then you'll want to get a Class 6, they're the faster ones.

I stuck a Runcore 32gb in mine just before christmas, it was expensive for what it is around 85 quid, but you shouldnt get charged customs as i believe they have raised the limit.

I also have a class 6 16gb card which was about £20. just a shame its blue :P not sure about the performance either, it's a Transcend normal size one.

Thanks for your replies. I have ordered a 16Gb Runcorn, just enough to squeeze Windows on there :)

I was looking at the Transcend cards so the fact you have one up and working is great news to me.

Thanks,

David

Will probably chuck Windows 7 (Beta) I reckon, really impressed with that so should be ok. Upgraded the memory already to 2Gb so all should be well.

ahhh cool :) was gonna say i had the 16gb and i couldnt fit vista on + the updates, which was why my wife bought me the 32gb after much begging :)

Nice move ;) I would have gone for the 32Gb if I could justify the extra cost of what was to be a "toy" that wouldn't cost much!!!

Hopefully my SSD is due tomorrow so I'll give it a go over the weekend. How does Vista run on your's by the way?

How does Windows 7 run on it? Imagine most features are turned off?

I still recommend Win XP for netbooks, especially an nLite version. My install takes 500Mb :D

Vista runs quite well on it really, check the scores :)

If Vista runs at a fair pace then I have hope for Windows 7 running quite smoothly. Any platform (unless massively underpowered) seems to run the new OS pretty well.

I'll let you know anyway when the nice person from UPS delivers my SSD!

I'm running Windows 7 on there now and it runs great. I have turned off a things like hibernate etc for disk space reasons but otherwise no problems at all. I have left XP on there too for comparison and I would say it runs equally as well on the same hardware.

Impressive stuff really from Microsoft with this OS.

Sorry to hijack thread but was wondering why i couldn't find the 32GB option on the Dell site but on the US site you can?

32GB option? Don't see any such option on either site. The 32GB Runcore (etc.) cards are an after-market upgrade.

There is the option on the US site and my father ordered one last month from the UK with a 32GB option.

Picture below taken from US site.
