hi,

i obtained a dell perc 5i card a while back with the intention of running a fast raid array however!

i have plugged my 2 x 1tb samsung f3 drives into the card and setup the array etc but the speed reported in hdtach and hdtune seems capped at a fairly level 200Mb/s where the onboard of my asus z68 pro reached and average of 240 - 250 from what i remember, something must be holding the card back?

i have the pin mod done to cover the pins that interfere with the smbus as this caused reported memory to drop to 4gb out of 8

anyone with experience of these cards with help would be appreciated!

I've seen the same thing on mine, I think its that the Perc alternates the striping on each drive between starting at the inside or outside of the platter, to ensure the minimum speed stays a high as possible. This usually means it has a very consistent performance across the whole array.

bbu is installed but think the battery is dead as i get the warning on boot.

write back is enabled in the bios but according to megaraid (have flashed to lsi bios) the setting has been set to write through because of the bbu being disabled

think i had adaptive read ahead set as well

stripe size was 32k

If you look in MSM you get an option to to cycle the battery and recharge it.
Give that a try and see if the battery recharges if the speeds perk up a little.

plot thickens, i have 2 x perc 5i cards, 2 x batterys and 2 x battery cables i have tried a combo of the above and get the same warning on startup about the battery either needing at least 30 mins charge or is disabled / removed

i know that some of the older firmwares allowed you to force the wb cache without the bbu, these still kicking about? would be doing this with the card i have flashed to lsi most likely
