dell server build

We use a mixture of Dell and HP at work and to be honest reliability wise I haven't found any difference.

Recently I've also found the Dell customer service to be better than HP (I'm in Australia though so ymmv)

What kind of role are you looking to buy one for?

I really like Dell.... never use to but the server are rock solid... have to say that they are my first choice at the moment

Never found a difference in the hardware tbh, but the Dell site is infinitely easier to spec up a server you want, rather than clicking through the pre-configured options that HP give you.

I think over the last few years, Dell have made some great improvements on their servers so I think they are a winner at the moment.

We recently bought a PowerEdge 2900 III, and I'm very impressed with it. The customer service we received throughout the entire process has been more than satisfactory, and on the very odd occasion where we have required aftersales support they have also been very good. Will definitely use them again.

Edit: Never buy direct off the website, always get yourself an account manager since the quote you will receive from them will be significantly cheaper than the website.

We're a full Dell house here - Servers, workstations, Tape Unit, Disk arrays and even switches.

Excellent kit for the price, highly reliable in my experience and customer support (especially Technical) is very good.

Dell use a mixture on manufacturers for the LTO drives and we have never had an issue with LTO-2/3/4 drives. We sell mainly Dell at work and use the Premier portal for all our purchases.

We sell and install a lot of Dell kit at work and its been really good so far. The server support is great and the workstation support is pretty good too - apart from the Samsung 320/500GB drive incompatibility issue :p I was also surprised by how good their L3 Switches are (PowerConnect 6224) we installed a stack of them in a school recently and besides an initial hiccup (fixed by a firmware update) they have been spot on, not a patch on Cisco kit in terms of OS completeness (CLI is a bit pants...) but I can't fault them really!

We too use the Premier page and in the early days it was dire but its picked up recently. It still has some oddities (not being able to add/remove certain components, wrong prices, etc) but its miles better than HP's pre-configured setup imho.

Ive always found them to lack the intergration and management capabilities found in there HP/IBM counterparts although there are very good value for money.

Ill just take back what I said earlier about the PowerConnect 6224's... The stack we installed the other week decided to fall over today :D

The only exposure I have to Dell is about 7 years ago and it was very, very poor.

We're completley a HP house and in my past couple of positions, again, HP. Personally I wouldn't change it. The hardware is very solid and we buy through resellers who do all the specing up themselves (to our spec obviously) so no tedious webpages at all. The only calls we place are for hard-drives which seem to die every two to three years and that's it.

Same for us here, it was the customer service that swung us away from HP.

Ive never heard bad things about their server hardware, but with HP being pretty much 'the' standard in most places, all the switches, chassies, blades & rackmounts at my place are HP.
Never had a reason to change.:).

We were wholly an HP house but recently have ordered some new Dell stuff.

They had some offer on, a blade enclosure and 2 blades for £3, so we've got 2 of those on the way along with some extras we've bought to fill them. Also just bought a Dell/Equallogic SAN.

Dell 2950s and 1950s here - noisy but effective.

Cusomter service has been excellent when I've needed it - a faulty DIMM replaced without any quibbles.

Either that price is a typo or I'm ordering some tomorrow:p

Edit: I should perhaps edge towards Dell, just because HP-UX is a pain in the a$$
