dell server build

Our datacentre has a mix of HP and Dell mostly with a healthy amount of Sun kit and some IBM stuff.

I used to rave on and on about HP but there really is very little to choose between Dell and HP for commodity (2u) server work these days. They both have their moments but are generally fine.

My personal preference at the moment is Sun x86 hardware but thats just too expensive to be practical in most situations.

Havent bought Dell's in year. Server support used be good being in Ireland but now we're purely HP. Being an HP re-seller does help some what.

HP support can be hit and miss sometimes, esp since some of its moved out to Bulgaria.

I'd recommend a Dell sever. HP are just as good but I find Dell cheaper with better support.

Odd, I bloody hate Dell support. I phone them and tell them what the problem is and what I want replacing and they ask for diagnostic reports, which means installing tools which isn't going to happen outside a planned works window. I call HP and say exactly the same thing, they say fine and call me back with the engineers name 15 minutes later so I can arrange a pass for the datacenter. Consequently, we're 100% HP for production servers now. I also find the hardware much more modular and easier to take apart.

99% dell poweredge 19xx and 29xx over here.

if youre UK based then youll find HP support shocking. we do with a £70k SAN unit anyway.

dell support ive had a replacement psu turn up in 4 hours before.
