Dell U2711..is it worth the money?

No major issues with AMD here either, or Nvidia for that matter.

The only issue I've had for a while was when RAGE was released. Texture pop-in was all over the place, but it was soon sorted in the next driver update and a game patch.

How you getting on with your monitor reddev85?
Im almost set on a U2711 & GTX580

Sorry, delayed response, but I got there in the end! ;p

So far so good. I must admit that it's still sinking in a bit. It's just awesome.

If you're going for a GTX 580, I'd suggest a 3GB version. 1.5GB is sitting right on the edge at this res in some games.

While 1.5GB should be just about enough right now, how much longer it will be would worry me.

That's why I went for a 7970, it was around the same price as a 3GB 580, but has better performance, runs cooler, and uses less power. Didn't seem much point in a 580 to me.

On the other hand, I've had to learn to live without CUDA and PhysX, but with the performance of the 7970, it wasn't hard to get over the loss.

I was worried about the AG (as you can read in this thread) but I have to say it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Nor does the input lag, it was already 25-30ms on my previous monitor, so whats a few more ms :p

Very impressed so far.

For me it was simply down to the fact that I already had a S-PVA 1920x1200 monitor, so getting a new monitor with only a TN panel at 1080p would seem like a downgrade.

All for 120Hz. It just didn't seem worth the sacrifice to me.

If you use your system 99.9% for gaming, then I'd go for a 120Hz monitor, especially for fast paced games.

If you do any image work, or like a lot of desktop real estate, then I'd recommend a screen with a higher res than 1080p.

And yes I agree, it is a tough decision. It certainly was for me, as you can tell by this thread.

the dell 24" are @ 1920x1200, so what made you upgrade? Was it just the extra real estate?

Yes, that and the fact that my Dell 2407WFP was 5 years old. It was an awesome screen at 1920x1200 but I just felt it was time to upgrade.

I wanted a bigger and more up to date monitor. So an upgrade from 24" to 27" just seemed like the next logical step.

Loved my 2407WFP, not to mention Dell's zero pixel guarantee. I also didn't want a TN panel which would have been a downgrade from S-PVA, or to increase the panel size while at the same time downgrading the resolution.

I wasn't that fussed with 120Hz since my system isn't used exclusively for gaming, so the higher res comes in useful for desktop work.

I Had also looked at the Hazro models, but they have QA issues and can't offer the same guarantee as Dell with regards to dead bright or stuck pixels. When it boils down to it I just wouldn't trust a Hazro monitor as much as I trust a Dell equivalent.

So when you add all those things together, the U2711 was the logical choice.

A 120Hz monitor would have been nice, but I'd rather have the IPS panel and higher res. Pity there isn't a monitor that can combine all three yet.

Oh well I bottled it

Ended up going for the 24" U2412m seeing as it was so cheap..

Partly becuase it gived me the option for 3 monitors if I decide to do that
Mostly as my Uncle sent me loads of stuff regarding developments in display tech that we should be seeing in nthe next 2 years, so this was a stop gap buy for me

Im happy enough, as I was impressed with the 24" dell when I saw it..

Fair enough. Pretty decent choice with the U2412M.

If it was a 24" I was after, I would have gone with that one too.

I had a cable issue at the beginning too. I just used the cable that I had been using for my Dell 2407WFP.

Screen was all blurry at full res. Then I changed over to the cable that was included with the U2711 and there it was in all its glory!

Still in awe of the monitor to be honest, there is input lag (around 30ms) but I'm not sensitive to it.

The anti-glare is not as major as it's made out to be. On white it is visible, but for me it does not detract from the overall quality of the screen. I'm so glad that I resisted the 120Hz 1080p monitors, because this resolution kicks ass!

Everything looks crisp and detailed, and colour reproduction is excellent.

So for anyone pondering over this monitor (or the 30" version), make a purchase! :D
