I have always wanted to get a non TN monitor to see what the fuss is all about. I currently have a Samsung SyncMaster 245b which isn't a bad monitor but it is a TN one and l want to treat myself :)

I plan to use it along with my existing monitor. I do pretty much everything on my PC from vector creation using Coreldraw, image editing, playing games, surfing the web .etc

I was thinking getting the Dell UltraSharp but l thought that since it is an LCD monitor it could soon be replaced by a LED one.

What do you guys think?

LCD vs LED is pretty much nothing more than a case of low power usage as far as i can tell, doesnt have any benefits towards the image quality.

Having a U2410 right next to two TN panel monitors i will undoubtably say you'll love it if you go for it!

LED backlit screens shouldn't degrade as quickly over time, though in reality a U2410 should still last you until the point that it has no resale value anyway.

I think we are a long way away from a top end Dell 24" refresh anyway. Go for it ;)

Do you mean OLED or LED backlit displays? Image quality on the U2410 could only really be improved at all lighting-wise with a coloured LED array backlight (very expensive) or by using white or coloured OLED pixels (currently expensive and unavailable). If you have the funds for it and you think it's the right screen for you, go for it.

I have been looking at the U2410 too to use for photo editing, shame about the response time though for gaming but that aint a problem.

Is it true that the U2410 with firmware A01 has resolved the issues that previous firmware had and indeed there is another later firmware update available from the Dell website.

Thanks for the replies guys. Yes, l wasn't looking for better image quality but for something that consumes less power. Anyway it seems like l will definately take the plunge. I have read about the monitor and with the latest firmwires it seems like a very good monitor.

In adition it is said that it comes with very accurate colours from the factory so there won't be any need for calibration but l could be wrong regarding that.

Do you guys know of any other screens in the same category that you would recommend over the Dell model?

As LCD's age the back light will create a dimmer picture which changes in colour (meaning your default white probably ends up being a bit more yellow etc). So the colours start out accurate but start to get less so as the screen acquires usage, meaning you'd still have to calibrate the screen eventually if you want it like the day it came.

That happens less on LED lit screens.. they retain more of their initial brightness for more of their life. Likewise I'd say that, lifespan wise, I'd trust edge lit LED lighting more too. However current white LED screens tend to have a narrower colour gamut (can be a good or a bad thing depending on preferences) and RGB LED back lighting tends to be rare and expensive.

My guess (which could, of course, be completely wrong) is that a replacement for the U2410 won't arrive until at least later in 2011. If you turn the brightness down it will make a big difference to the power consumption and will likely help your back light last a bit longer too. I don't have the numbers to hand but, from memory (So apply a small pinch of salt), the U2410 uses about 40W at 0 (zero) brightness maybe about 90W at 100% brightness, assuming you keep the contrast around 50. So the usage is pretty good if you can keep it in a darkened room (where 0 brightness should be ok for the first few years of life at least).

E-IPS screens are very similar to IPS screens but allow more light through, meaning a cheaper light can be used.. That tends to translate to lower energy usage too. The real alternative to the U2410 is the HP ZR24W, so have a look at that before you leap perhaps. Otherwise you're stuck on the 22/23" screens that are 16:9 and 1080p.

From what i can gather it's something to do with backlight bleeding, which is supposed to be fixed on rev A01, at least i think that's what i gathered from posts around here
