I've been holding off buying a new monitor for a while now. I was having a dig the other night and noticed a mention of the Dell U3417W. Just when I thought I had settled on what I was getting another spanner is thrown in the works!

After googling I found this thread.

Could this be the one we've been waiting for?

it really depends on your needs from a screen. just because it's new (or rather not even released yet) doesnt mean it will be any better than any other available screen. it really depends on your requirements for the screen. very little info available for the U3417W also at the moment keep in mind

The '34' designation would imply 34", rather obviously... which would suggest it may be using the same 34" panel we've seen in the X34/PG348Q, so my guess is this will be Dell's version, just as the S2716DG was their version of the PG278Q Swift. Pure speculation of course, but that would be my guess. That said, it could also possibly be using the newer version of the panel which seems to have more curve and guaranteed 100Hz, as seen here.

I'm thinking mainly from the perspective of quality control being all over the place on the alternative models. Admittedly I have had limited experience with other manufacturer returns but my interaction with Dell in the past has always been positive. If splashing out £900-£1000 on a monitor I would expect perfection across the board. Asus's CS is shocking, and Acer from what I've read are similarly poor. I wouldn't expect problems but would be nice to have the peace of mind should any arise :)

Even the Dell U3415W uses the same panel as the X34 / PG34. This panel having G-Sync doesn't match up as it would have the G designation which U3417W clearly doesn't have. More likely that it will use the same display as the new LG's such as the UC88. To be honest the X34P is probably using that too - it's just that the overclock is guaranteed and done at factory to make "native" 100Hz.

You may be right on the G-Sync. Dell copied the LG after all with the U3415W before, so it could be they're doing that with the UC88 also. Definitely seems to be a lot of panel sharing going on, all derivatives of that old 60Hz model that's been around for eons now! Nothing new yet, although the AOC Agonrange has a 35" VA monitor coming out later this year that may prove very interesting.

AOC have confirmed to me that the specifications (and possibly model designation) in that article linked to are incorrect.

Interesting. What are we looking at then... something not as good as this? The panel description fits exactly that which was talked about back in January on TFT Central, AUO manufactured 35" VA at 3440x1440 144Hz.

I would snap up a Gsync 34'' from dell in a heartbeat.

I wish Dell did more gsync monitors!! It would give me a huge peace of mind !

Yeah me too :) Dell are really the EVGA of the monitor world (I know they do other stuff too lol). The way I see it, unless the others catch up quick they don't deserve the custom. It's inexcusable to charge so much for something yet have lousy customer support.

Yes indeed that panel is out there to use. Although it might even be that the end product is 'better' than specified on the article. Overclocked beyond 144Hz, perhaps. At any rate, official information should be available in July.

Yup! The problem is they're products are just slightly lagging behind (like in this case) :(

Well this should prove interesting... it's definitely the most intriguing looking 21:9 on the horizon, so I look forward to finding out more.

Definitely looking forward to the new U3417W, however as a previous owner of a U3415W (and many other DELL monitors) I would like to see that the new model has (in this order):

- Fixed the light bleed problem in the corners. My U3415W was particularly bad for this.
- G-sync. Really has to have this to compete in the ultra-wide market.
- 100hz. As above.
- Add back in the bracket to accept the DELL soundbar. Nearly every DELL monitor since 2005 has this (except the U3415W) and it's so neat.
- Flat vs curved. I don't care too much about this, but I saw no benefit in having a curved panel.

Hopefully DELL has listened to some of the critisms users have mentioned of the U3415W and will be addressing them in the U3417W. Time will tell.

I'm going to make a prediction here. this isn't based on anything but just my gut feel.

Given it's an UltraSharp screen i'm expecting it to be a 60Hz IPS panel, without any overclocking support. It's not part of their gaming lineup and so i doubt it will feature G-sync or FreeSync either. All in all, i can't really think of much they are likely to make different to the U3415W - if you consider the very small changes with the U2414H > U2417H and U2715H > U2717D. I'm not aware of any 4-side borderless panels in the 34" sector, so they might not even be able to change the design in that way as they did with the 27" U2717D.

Updates :) Description and photos. Doesn't look like the screen is listed on the Dell website yet but it is listed elsewhere.

Dell U3417W

  • Creates a heightened sense of immersion, 34" diagonal wide viewing experience with an Array of connectivity.
  • Enhanced clarity: full WQHD 3440 1440 clarity at 60 Hz and consistent colors across an ultrawide 178°/172° viewing angle combine to create a more appealing Display.
  • Multiple connections: with HDMI 2.0, MHL, DP, mini-dp, 2 x USB 3.0 upstream, 4 x USB 3.0 downstream ports, audio out, connecting to all your secondary devices at once is both easy and convenient.
  • Powerful 18W integrated speakers
  • Height-adjustable (115mm), tilt and swivel

60Hz? That's it?? Pffff!! Basically it's the U3415W +2. On yer bike...

As Badass said, it's an Ultrasharp and thus 60Hz IPS was always going to be the likely configuration.

They're targetted more at productivity than gaming. I have a 3415 and frankly I want IPS for colour reproduction and accuracy for photo processing and the like. I do game on it but don't have a problem with 60Hz and don't need G-Sync if the graphics card can always produce 60fps or more.

I'd actually wager that the majority of the Dell ultrawides are sold for productivity applications rather than gaming so that's where their target market is. They're happy to leave the gaming market to the likes of Acer.

All that said I can't actually see any difference in spec to the 3415 although there must be some. Maybe just incremental improvements to IQ.
