Dell Ultrawide U3417W

They're targetted more at productivity than gaming. I have a 3415 and frankly I want IPS for colour reproduction and accuracy for photo processing and the like. I do game on it but don't have a problem with 60Hz and don't need G-Sync if the graphics card can always produce 60fps or more.

I'd actually wager that the majority of the Dell ultrawides are sold for productivity applications rather than gaming so that's where their target market is. They're happy to leave the gaming market to the likes of Acer.

You're right of course, but I don't understand why Dell are staying away from the gaming sector. They have done well with the S2716DG, and they have a very reputable name when it comes to monitors with MANY people who'd snap one up in a heartbeat, as Aaron and Wulfster attest to. They'd clean up if they had a competitor to the X34.

I'm thinking mainly from the perspective of quality control being all over the place on the alternative models. Admittedly I have had limited experience with other manufacturer returns but my interaction with Dell in the past has always been positive. If splashing out £900-£1000 on a monitor I would expect perfection across the board. Asus's CS is shocking, and Acer from what I've read are similarly poor. I wouldn't expect problems but would be nice to have the peace of mind should any arise :)

The BLB on some of the current Dell 34 superwide have been shocking, the worst i have seen

They do have gd customer service, however quality control i dont think is rated esp highly

Issue is, the bleed is caused by panel, and Dell had hardly control over that - they can't just throw away half of panels they buy ;)

The same thing with 32" 4K Dells. At some point I thought about buying it because "Dell Quality", but apparently these screens had exactly same complaints as BENQs and Acers using same kind of panels.

Looks like Dell is pretty good picking best panel in the segment when they have a choice (e.g. when size/resolution has 5+ different panel models from different manufacturers). But when they don't have much choice (sometimes certain size/res has just one panel model being in existance) - they often can't resist releasing monitor after all, even when panels available are sub-standard.

News from last week.

http://www.techradar.com/news/computing/pc/dell-s-high-res-curved-monitor-lets-you-multi-task-like-a-boss-1327082

"On top of giving you plenty of space to multi-task, users can also work from two PCs simultaneously on one screen. The monitor comes with a built-in Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM), allowing users to plug in two devices and even two sets of keyboards and mice"

Really like the idea of the U3417W being a 'little brother' to the gargantuan 4 client P4317Q.

Hopefully we'll see more info in the next week or so, I'm desperate to find out if the backlight situation has improved.

If so, this is looking like the new monitor for me :)

Really depends on what you want to do. Not everyone buys a monitor with gaming in mind.

The price is ridiculous, but then so is every monitor with GSync stamped on the side - especially the 34" ultra wides.

Trusting Acer and/or ASUS makes less sense to me given their pretty dodgy CS reputation.

I've been after a good deal on the current 34" for a while now for use at work. I'm hoping we'll see prices drop when the new one arrives. It may not have the bells and whistles of the gaming versions, but it's handsdown the sexiest looking ultrwide out there and I have no need of adaptive sync at work :)

Yeah the point being the Dell doesn't have gsync.

It doesn't, but going by the limited information, it's not intended to be primarily used as a gaming monitor.

If productivity is your thing this has real potential.

The price is unrealistic, pretty much the same as the U3415W when it was released. I can't imagine it'll stay like that for long.

"Immerse yourself in the curve: Increased screen curvature enhances your field of vision by delivering near-uniform focus" - this will be the main difference I think. I bet it will use the same panel as the LG 34UC98-W, so twice as curved.

Correct, it does use the steeper curved panel. :)

I ordered one on Monday for work, £772 inc Vat, it seems to be slightly held up somewhere, normally IT give me a heads up of a due date, but they haven't had confirmation from Dell yet..

Anyone physically got one in-hand?

Nice one Demon, really interested to hear how things go and your impressions of it. If you're able to a photo showing the back light on a dark scren that would be awesome :)

I was going to order one the other night but had a look at the state of my credit card and bailed at the last minute :(
