Hi,
We have a family computer which is used by..... everyone lol.
To be fair the computer hasn't done too badly considering it's about 6 yrs old! It's a Dell Dimension 8200 (£1300 at the time).
Firstly, is it even possible to replace the motherboard? (i don't mind modding the case a little :p)
This is quite specific,
I need :
-AGP Motherboard (doesnt have to have sound or graphics, currently have gefore Ti and soundblaster which i could use)
-Memory (about 1gb).
-Hard drive (maybe 160gb)
-CPU (maybe dual core)

Budget is £300.

I came up with this but i'm not sure where to get the 'AM2 CPU Board' for the Motherboard + I'm not sure if everything is compatible:

CP-166-AM AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ 2.00GHz (Socket AM2) - Retail (CP-166-AM)
£94.99 £94.99
MB-002-AK Asrock 939Dual-SATA2 (Socket 939 & Upgradable to AM2) AGP & PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-002-AK)
£37.99 £37.99
MY-083-CS Corsair 1GB DDR2 Value Select PC5300 Dual Channel Kit (2x512MB) (VS1GBKIT667D2) (MY-083-CS)
£74.99 £74.99
HD-001-HI Hitachi Deskstar T7K250 NCQ 160GB SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (0A31637) (HD-001-HI)
£34.95 £34.95
Subtotal £242.92
Shipping (City Link Parcel Next Day (Delivered Mon-Fri)) £8.25
VAT £43.96
Total £295.13

Thanks for looking :)

Not really m8,you have not put in a PSU in your config,if your dell is 6 years old i do`nt think your new mobo will fit to be honest, and your psu will not fit ether.
Buy a antec sonataII with a psu and case and you have a good start, dell are for dell parts period.
I know what you mean thought £1800 i paid for my fist pc and thart was a dell what a waste lol.

Pretty much dead on. Bought a £1700 Dimension 8300 in 2003, but when it came to upgrading I simply had to sell the chassis motherboard and psu. The 8200 chassis takes a rather odd form factor.

Dell has specific connectors on their own mobos so if you want to put a new mobo in the old dell case then your power buttons will not work and the mobo itself might not fit too well. It's much simpler to just get a new case and build a new system. It will not cost you that much more.

I might try a newer motherboard in the dell and see what happens :p

I can tell you what will happen, as a few posters already have.

The mobo will very likely not fit, and even if it does, the case connectors and power supply will not fit / be too low powered.

Hi,

When I posted this combination the other day I was informed that you need another peice of kit to upgrade to AM2 and it is quite rare at the moment.

I was advised to pick up the socket 939 processor instead.

Like the guys previous are saying; you wont be able to fit a new motherboard in there and even if you did the psu from dell would cause serious problems if you managed to somehow get it connected.

Although those that say ALL dells can not be upgraded are very very wrong. My dimension 5000 has standard btx supply same wiring same voltages. It seems dell listened to their customer feedback and started making a few more things standard.

If you need a case and psu as well then this might do the job,
Antec NSK4400 Mini Tower Case - 380W SmartPower PSU (CA-052-AN) Price: £43.99 (£51.69 Including VAT at 17.5%)
Means you budget will have to grow or can you sell the old base unit to raise some funds, not that it will probably fetch much given the age of it.
Think i mentioned it in your other thread, the memory will need changing as well.

As others have said, the 8200 is a b***h to upgrade. I have one currently sitting under a desk at home and over the years having thoroughly checked out what can and can't be upgraded, what others have said is true.

The motherboard, PSU and case have to stay together as a trio. You cannot put a non-dell motherboard into the case, you cannot change the PSU and you cannot (if you would ever want to) put this motherboard into a non-dell case.

Its a bummer!

If I were you budget for a new psu and case, and upgrade the whole lot.

I would like to thank everyone for all of their help and opinions :)
I will see if it's worth making a brand new system. If not, the family will have to deal with the slow dell :p
Thanks again :)

What about this, a little over budget (after delivery) but includes a new case. Gone for a beige case, in case you're using the optical drives from your current Dell which I'm guessing will be beige :) If not, just pick another case that you like...

The motherboard doesn't support AGP, but has graphics built in which will allow you to use the new computer now and upgrade to a new PCI-E graphics card when funds allow.

As previously mentioned, the motherboard you picked won't work with an AM2 CPU out of the box, you have to buy an add-on card for that to work.

MB-006-AK Asrock ALiveNF4G-DVI (Socket AM2) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-006-AK) £39.99
MY-066-CS Corsair 1GB DDR2 Value Select PC4200 Dual Channel Kit (2x512MB) (VS1GBKIT533D2) (MY-066-CS) £71.99
