Demand for graphics cards drops dramatically in Q1 – report

What happened between Q2 2014 and Q3 2014 to make them lose nearly 10%?

Like Halfmad and elmuzzy66 said I would guess that it was the end of the mining craze which was keeping AMD's market share artificially high, that would have been the ideal time for AMD to release a new range of cards but since they haven't AMD owners have had no reason to upgrade and for those in the market Maxwell based cards could be seen as much more attractive?

The question people are asking themselves is

Should I hang on to this 28nm card or get a new 28nm card with only slightly better performance.

+1 Really its i have decided unless something is a huge jump in improvement I'm waiting for the die shrink

Drip feeding of tech has meant there isn't much of an upgrade path. Serves them both right. I can't see things changing unless things move forward a decent amount.

As above. The much lauded 970 and 980 don't push any boundaries and the 980 is only incrementally better than the 780ti. Arguably no better. For every enthusiast getting excited about power savings there would appear to be another five enthusiasts who aren't buying the spiel and certainly aren't buying the cards.

Except according to OCUK the 970/980 launch was the biggest and most successful ever.

The main reason for the drop is actually AMD not having any new cards, nvidia are selling OK which is why they have gained 15% market share from AMD.

nvidia sales dropped a little in the last quarter is me the 970-980s have been out for some time, people purchased before Christmas not after.

Well to be fair when the 970/980 cards came out nv sold a lot. Amd on the other hand still has the 290 out and it has been a while. To be fair though i am on 1080p on a 680 KFA2 and so happy with it and i am sure i am not the only one as mentioned above. The only taxing games i played recently were Crysis 2 and 3 and i really enjoyed the graphics especially the third one. I dont see a reason to upgrade.the pc market gets console ports which are badly coded and the only reason i would upgrade would be if there was a single gou that can do 4k 60fps with all eye candy maxed and a reasonable price not 2k just for a card that will get 65% cheaper in 6 months time.

This year has seen a dramatic drop (always is a pretty big drop at this time of year for many types of business anyway) for many industries going through Q1 its not something specific to the GPU market - a couple of years back or so it came squeakily close to finishing AMD but they are in a bit better shape to weather it this time around.

No doubt in another couple of months it'll start to pickup again - pretty much always does - aslong as both companies have good offerings going into the 2nd half of the year it'll be little more than a distant memory.

EDIT: A little concerned for AMD though - if they don't have some solid products to go in the 2nd half of the year especially GPU ones they could be looking at a very bleak future - if their next big GPU is a flop it will hit very hard.

The descrete market has been in decline for years now ao the news article isn't reporting anything new.
