I thought I would start a thread on Demon ISP, as there are not that many of them at the moment.

I have been with them for nearly 4 years and have always had a great connection, and have never ever had to call their customer services.

In the last year orso, they have closed their UK call centre's and moved them to India, and thats when my problems also started. On average I download a maximum of 20-30GB a month (I have BWmeter to control this) But Demon have decided to send me an email everyday to advise that I am about to reach their FUP of 50GB. And on the 31st of march they put me on 128Kbps. I was fuming and called them to ask for my MAC code and proof that I was downloading so much. They said they cant send me proof but they could lift the ban and put me back on normal speeds. Which they then confirmed on the 2nd of April by email, that the ban was lifted.

Everything was fine, I downloaded around 4GB in the last 10 days and then on the 12th of April I receive another email stating that I had downloaded 50GB and that they would cap my speeds at 128Kps. Again I was fuming and called them and they said that I have downloaded to much and they cant send me proof and they wont lift the ban on this. I asked for my MAC code and they said only their special MAC team can do this, and they are only open Mon-Fri 09:00 - 17:30. So now I have to wait for my MAC code, and have to put up with extremley slow speeds.

Their customer services has got very bad since they moved their call centre and their services have gone down hill fast. If you still want to join Demon ISP, be it on your own head. but I would stay well clear from them. And at £19.99 they are not one of the cheapest to be with.

(I am also not alone in this. Do a search in Google, and you will find lots of people who are having the same issuses as me)

Are you sure it's a 50gig download limit and not a 50gig transfer limit? If you leave a bittorrent client seeding something it could possibly bump up the amount used by a fair bit, so even if you're download total is under the cap, the total might be over it.

Their FUP says 50GB down, however i have also been limited for having over 50 combined, should be getting the MAC tomorrow, fed up now, our years up, we're gone, a 50 CAP disguised as a FUP is taking the mick, not to mention when limited it doesnt even feel like 128, it feels like dial up

unfortunately mum likes cheap, and went on a friends recommendation 1yr ago, this has been the worst year of internet ive had since dial up

off to sky, ok not the greatest, but cheap, and with far more flexibility in their FUP, so mum's happy, and im reasonably content, good enough

My network is WEP secured and I am always checking to see all the connections on it...
You do know how easy WEP is to crack, don't you.

Anyway, despite what anyone may claim, it's almost always combined up/down. Also, unless you're using a USB modem, software running on the PC can never see all the traffic that goes over the connection. Even with the PC off, if the router is on you're using bandwidth. Unless you're on the wrong end of a DoS attack then it won't be much bandwidth, admittedly.

Wernt they bought out by Scottish power? We have them at work like most business we didn't leave sooner because of DT, Stonegate and sticking together some Zen lines *** :/

Was with Demon on dial-up years an years an years ago and they were pretty good.

With UKOnline and, fingers-crossed, they've actually been a pleasure to be with! No problems and tech/customer support have always been good whenever we've had questions - recommended from me!

Putting WEP encryption on is like having a baby guard your files. I would upgrade your encryption to WPA and use a more secure username and password that (at least the password has) Symbols/upper and lower caser letters and numbers.

According to their FUP the max is 50GB a month. And there is NO WAY I can get over that...

It's calculated over a rolling 30 days, when they remove the ban they're probably taking you back down to 47 or 48gb, they won't be wiping your usage completely, hence why you got capped again.

But yes, their customer service is now crap.

When I got capped, I was literally getting 5Kb/s.

When we got ISDN we went with Demon. The customer service was a complete joke and they took us for a (very extended) ride. We ended up leaving them as soon as we could. I'd avoid them like the plague, personally.

I know WEP is not 100% secure, but I also only allow my computers on my network. My MAC and IP's and I do check these daily.

And I would be happy going for an unlimted ISP, but try and get one of those unless you want to pay over £70 per month...

MAC address blocking is useless if the encryption can be broken in seconds.

I'd suggest monitoring what you use, but if Demon don't give anything to compare it with there isn't a great deal of point.
