Right, I'm new to the AV surround game and am wondering what to do. My current plan is to get a Denon-2106 amp and a pair of B&W speakers initially. I will then get the rest of the surround speakers from the same range when space and funds allow.

My questions are:

1) How will the amp handle having less than 5.1 speakers i.e. will it work OK if i add a centre or does it have to be stereo or full 5.1?

2)is the virtual surround any good from the denon?

3) Will I get stereo from my dvd player through co-ax/optical or will I initially need to connect 2 phono leads?

Cheers

1) Stereo or 5.1 - anything in between sounds a bit "wrong" though it wont damage anything to run it like that.

2) Virtual surround is a bit pants no matter what is used, IMO.

3) Yes, you will be able to use the digital outputs. Set the input to be digital and tell it to output in stereo and it will do exactly that :)

I use the 602s3's with a Yamaha amp, and think they're superb for fronts, I've diverted all the bass below 100hz to the sub and this balances them out nicely since they can be a bit bass heavy. I assume your not using your setup for music, since A/V amps are not best suited to music, although saying that I know that denon are better for music than Yamaha. I'd also recommend the M1's as rear speakers when you get around to buying some, amazing sound for small speakers, but a sub is a must with them.
