Denon AV receiver model numbers

AVR's have gone stupidly expensive, you're probably looking at 3600, 4500 second hand for that price.

the second number is the generation, ie 3400 But some gens skip the second number like there is no 4600 but there is 3600.

Yeah price difference between 3700 and 3800...although the later does have extra sub outputs and Dirac (at a later upgrade price)
Still it's a lot of money, for in essence a mid range AVR.

I remember when budget Yamaha AVR's were around £150

I had to replace my AVR last year due to my old Yamaha dying outright. Replaced it with an AVR-X2700H which is more than adequate for my needs, by the cost of them has most certainly gone up a huge amount, I couldn't believe it.

Am I right in thinking Denon is probably a nice upgrade over an Onkyo unit? Or could you recommend anything else? (I've always bypassed Yamaha and Sony, and Marantz and Arcam etc are silly money)

Yamaha's I found have a decent sound, but their room EQ isn't the best (but you can tweak it youself as it has manual PEQ settings) Generally reliable. I've owned three Yamaha's and even the old one still works fine that has been sold off.

Denon room EQ is quite advanced, but you'd want the 3xxx range. Marantz are same company as Denon - Marantz have HDAM circuitry.

I've just bought an LG OLED65CS6LA https://www.lg.com/uk/tvs/lg-oled65cs6la

I'd guess the Onkyo is approx 5-6 years old now. I'm sure I bought that when I bought a 3D TV to find I had to upgrade the amp.
Seems every time I buy a TV, an amp is required too :o
I know the feeling, I'm constantly leap frogginh. I have a 6 year old samsung in the living room, but bought a 3700 a year or so ago. A new TV is on the cards, but I'm struggling to justify 1800 for a nice 65 inch (even with liberal use of man maths lol).
