Find yourself an NHS dentist.

There are three standard charges for all NHS dental treatments:

  • Band 1 course of treatment – £17.50
This covers an examination, diagnosis (including X-rays), advice on how to prevent future problems, a scale and polish if needed, and application of fluoride varnish or fissure sealant.
  • Band 2 course of treatment – £48.00
This covers everything listed in Band 1 above, plus any further treatment such as fillings, root canal work or removal of teeth.

  • Band 3 course of treatment – £209.00
This covers everything listed in Bands 1 and 2 above, plus crowns, dentures and bridges.

I assume those would apply in Northern Ireland.

White fillings can't be done on the NHS, only silver ones.

Dental treatments

Fillings

Fillings are used to repair a hole in a tooth caused by decay. The most common type of filling is an amalgam, made from a mixture of metals including mercury, silver, tin, copper and zinc. Your dentist will offer the most appropriate type of filling according to your clinical needs. This includes white fillings, if appropriate.

Amalgam fillings and some white fillings are available on the NHS (band 2) and cost £48.00 per course of treatment.

My NHS dentist does white fillings for band 2 - and even band 1 sometimes if its a simple job and doesn't need a 2nd appointment.

Last week I got a white filling and a scale & polish done at my NHS dentist. The charge was £82.50.
I think I've been had - he said only they only did amalgams on the NHS prices.

I just went the dentist and was going to make a moan post about it but now I can just reply to this one.

I called up dentist and asked them about NHS, she said that 6 month wait for nhs and only have free dental if you are on benefits. Well rule that out then. I had a pain in my gum and had not been for 8 years so thought i must go. I got an appointment next morning 8am, had not had an appointment like that since i went to the doctor in SA. I arrived filled in all the forms and she offered me water, never get that at the nhs doctor.

But I was dissapointed with the service it was very overpriced and i thought it was rushed I am going to complain next time i speak to them. Turned out it was just an ulcer so nothing to worry about and she did a quick check and two crappy xrays. Cost me £56. Another £30 for a clean but i would have to make another appointment. She said that i could do with one filling and I asked about getting my mercury fillings removed. She wanted to charge me £110 per filling, which is double the price I have seen at other places. The dentist also had a bad attitude. I am going to get a referral from her and then tell the receptionist that she has a bad attitude and is over priced.

I wonder at what point during the appointment could i have said that she has a bad attitude and i am not paying for the service would i get away with it. After you sign the papers you are realy in a position where you can't walk away without having to go through hassle with credit companies about not paying. kind of sucks that way.

If you're a student or have low income you can apply for an HC1 form and get the treatment at NHS dental practices for free
