Most of you know the story so far but for those that don’t here is a little back story, about 9 or 10 weeks ago my car (1999 911 Carrera 4) developed a problem with oil and coolant mixing in the header tank. Knowing I had caught the problem fairly early I booked the car in to be looked at, stripped down and repaired. For months I have been eagerly awaiting parts one in particular a metal pipe of all things was taking forever to come from Germany, but last week everything was here and the rebuild began.

Fast forward to today approximately 10 weeks in. Last night I had a call from my mechanic, the car is ready to be picked up, all day at work I had been thinking about it. Finally my baby will be back where she belongs, so I leave work early and head down to my mechanics. I get there at about 4pm and there she is sitting out in the sun looking all shiny and pretty, they had even washed it ready for me, my face lights up and all I can think about is getting her out on the open road.

I get in the car fire it up, huge smile as she begins to purr, I put the roof down, look in the rear view and I can see what looks like steam coming from the engine at the rear. We pop the boot open and sure enough there is a small amount of smoke coming off the engine, my mechanic at this point tells me that he has taken it on about 3 test drives and it has been fine. I glance at the millage and he is not lying there is an extra 20 odd miles on there than when I put her in, that and he is a family friend, totally trusted with more than 30 years of experience with performance cars, specifically Porsches.

After a small amount of stripping down everything points to spilling a small amount of hydraulic fluid. So she goes back together and my mechanic tells me to take it on a test drive and keep an eye on the temps, oil pressure etc. This is where everything starts going wrong, I get less than a mile up the road and the car starts to feel like its losing a bit of power low down in the rev range, a few seconds later its only running on 5 of the 6 cylinders, I call my mechanic and he tells me to nurse it back. I get it back and the problem is still there and you can hear it sounds like utter rubbish.

Anyway we turn her off and do some digging, turn her back on and the misfire is nowhere to be seen and the engine check light on the dash is no longer illuminated. At this point the diagnostics come out but the car is showing that there are no fault codes. At this point we go on another test drive get to about the same place and all of a sudden she is misfiring again, so again I nurse it back and the computer again was reading zero faults.

At 7pm we gave up, my mechanic drove me the 10 miles home and said that it will be looked at as a matter of priority before he leaves on holiday at the weekend. I now sit here totally deflated and depressed, to rub salt into the wound I’m sitting next to a bill which tells me that I’m about 3k into this and when I go to get her she appears to be in a worse state than when I dropped her off, with an extra nice new scratch on the rear bumper to boot (This I have been promised will be repaired by my favourite sprayer so I’m not really all that fussed, after all accidents happen and there was some light surface scratches on there anyway)

I don’t know what to think really, it is amazing how a day which promised so much can turn around and slap you in the face. If anybody is still reading this now then quite frankly you are doing better than me, normally when I see a wall of text like this I run a mile. I guess this post achieves nothing really other than gives me a place to vent so thanks for listening.

Rotten news :(

I thought you had a Porsche warranty in place? Or does that not cover this sort of thing?

unfortunately not mate i'm one of the brave/stupid people who went into this eyes open knowing that the car is to old for a warranty, however I did have a pot of money ready when the inevitable happened.

I'm not a motors regular, but a wall of text explaining issues with a car is kind of expected isn't it? If you'd just said, OMGZ my car dun broke then I'd lose interest.

Sorry to hear you're having so many problems, but perhaps you were lucky it happened whilst still near the garage rather than in a few days.

Funny this should come up, we had a thread on here a little while ago about how much Porsche you could get for 10k, it was a 1998 911 with 90k on it or something.

Things like this, painful reality of owning a 13 year old premium brand sports car.

Hope it gets fixed soon.

Good point.. I'm kind of glad that this problem happened whilst I was there. I was just looking forward to that first drive again, it promised so much! I just hope it is a simple fix like a coil pack or something.

Before this I rolled the dice on a 10k 3.2 Boxster S, that car ran flawlessly before driver error put it in the porka graveyard. :(

To put it into perspective this car was 15k in January with a good spec and 60k on the clock. I have already put about 2k into new tyres and a few other essentials before this bill.

The misfire came back but did the smoke come back? Were the pressures and temps ok? Oil and water still separate?

The smoke seemed to get less the longer the car was on it wasn't smoking from the exhausts which is a good thing just from within the engine bay.

Oil pressure and running temps seemed pretty much spot on as well. Oh and no signs of oil in the header tank.

With a quick skim read it has me thinking it could be an electrical issue. The misfire came and went, if it mechanical I doubt it would come and go. Perhaps a fouled plug or faulty injector wiring.

I would expect there to be lambda codes on the bank or multiple random misfire codes for that bank.
Don't forget the whole loom will have been off so there are plenty of plugs to have been missed or not seated correctly

These sort of things do your head in and I feel your pain Vince. I hope tomorrow shows nothing more than a sensor issue or something simple that your mechanic locates, fixes and she is back on the road eating up the tarmac.

I have a Porsche - I feel for you man :(

The funny thing is I know about all the problems and every inch of me says to get rid of it and save for a dfi engine car or something much newer, but every time I am around it or I just peek a look at it all those feelings go away and nothing else I have driven even comes close to how it makes me feel.

There is just one problem its seriously starting to hurt the wallet and realistically I'm probably looking at some more big bills before it's how I want it. I think in reality I was expecting to spend about 25k on it (including purchase price) before its where I wan't it. I just didn't expect it all to come in one massive hit six months in.

Also bare in mind that smoke at start up is nothing to be too worried about as long as it clears fairly quickly as the flat 6, not least a flat 6 that has perhaps been started, moved a few yards and stopped, tend to burn a bit of oil at start. I once started my old on after I had washed it and put it straight back into the garage to be presented with a WW1 Battleship making smoke, so don't read too much into that unless it was pouring out.

Sadly you have bought an 80K motor car, the bills are those of an 80K car when they go wrong, but chin up this could be something very simple.

chin up fella. sounds to me like a simple electrical issue (loose wire type thing). Hope it gets sorted!

p.s what exactly went wrong to run up a 3k bill?

Water in the header tank, the bill is 3k because the following work has been done:

engine removal
pressure testing of heads
pressure testing of oil cooler
drill out and re-tap all 12 snapped manifold bolts.

Parts list looks something like this:

Engine oil cooler
O ring seals
Vent pipe
pipe clips
2 new exhaust parts
stainless manifold bolts
9 liters of engine oil
oil filter
5 liters antifreeze
Gaskets
water pipe
ac recharge

then your electrical issue is minor and will easily be rectified!
