Are there any private dermatologists around or do you have to go through a doctor first. As my condition is not really major as it were but is affecting me all the same.

I would much rather just get a private consultation. You hear loads of people saying go to a dermatologist but they seem non existant without clearance from a doctor.

go to your doctor and ask for a referal, then when you get a stupidly long date given to you on the nhs waiting list, call that dermatologist and go private with him/her. that's what my mum did with her recent(ish) problem with her skin.

I had a problem and was at the doc's numerous times, always trying just one more cream.

My Aunt worked as a domestic at the local hospital and mentioned it to a consultant, he asked her to tell me to ask my doctor to refer me to him.

I did and before my backside was in the chair in his office he told me what was wrong with me, I had spent years seeing different docs and two weeks after seeing this consultant my problem was gone, well worth insisting on a referral.

I would go back to your doc and insist you are referred to dermatology. If you have no joy, make an appointment with another doc at your practice.

You should not have to pay to be seen privately imho.

Well, why pay for something you are already paying for?

Private = Paid, who do you think pay their salary?

If you ask your GP for a referral and did not state specifically that you want private then you'll get referred to an NHS consultant which usually has a waiting time of months/years. If you have insurance or willing to pay private then the waiting list is more like weeks.
