Descrimination on OCUK

... Tbh i dont really pay much attention to what the media says about islam and muslims these days, its the same ole **** time and time again.
Understood.

But it's why I think some direct communication like this, and perhaps you and other Muslims answering questions and directly addressing issues helps - because it removes the media and commercial sensationalising from the mix, and let's people discuss it sensibly. And if we can't do that, there's no hope.

I understand that it seems thankless, and frustratingly resultless, and that there's no obligation to speak for Muslims as a whole just because you are one, but where two rational people (like, I hope, you and me) can have a rational discussion, it can only do a tiny, tiny little bit to help spread mutual understanding of viewpoints. We may never entirely agree, but if we both understand a bit more, and hopefully others do too, then we're better off than if this doesn't happen. If we both understand the other's perspective a bit better, maybe it'll enhance mutual respect, even if we don't change viewpoint. And if that mutual respect, and communication, was expanded to communities as a whole, perhaps some of the current antagonism would dissipate. Because, to my mind, if the schism is ever to be healed, it needs understanding of the other's viewpoint on both sides, and without dialog, that can never happen. You and I aren't going to solve issues here, but we can't even start if we don't talk.

So while I can understand how you can be angry and frustrated, that is why I said I think it's a shame that you feel it isn't worth keeping up the dialog, because you feel you aren't achieving anything. I'm not sure you're not achieving something, even if it isn't obvious, but don't we each have to at least try, and keep trying?

I think it reflects how the majority of the country feels like right now.

I think we are sick of being taken advantage of by outsiders

So when, for example, Muslim community leaders seek to sensationalise issues, they're really only trying to keep themselves in a job.
Replace "Muslim community leaders" or even "minority community leaders" with "politician" and I'd agree wholely.

Maybe if we had conviction politicians instread of career politicians, things would be better. But how many politicians are conviction-based? Yeah, not many, and none at the top.

I think that convictions are indeed a problem in politics.

[obvious joke]
Why else do you think the Tories have lost so many elections?
[/obvious joke]
