Its a bit basic, which I think is what is giving the cheap vibes. Maybe throw some rounded corners at it, modify the background a bit, give some borders to things. I actually quite like the picture links on the right with the dropshadowed text above, but the artistic cutout of the photograph you have isnt working it for me.

Lose the 'white background with floating blue square effect'. Just have a plain background.

For a first stab, keep it plain and add more photographs. Fix the bad anti-alias on the logo too.

For its purpose, it's not too bad. That said, it could be better. I think changing the banner, background and content footer will have a big impact.
