*** Desk and Room Gallery***

Generally just the glow from peoples cases. But you can get a PSU with some wire stuck in 2 of the pins (Cant remember which), so it powers up without being connected to a PC. So I guess some people just do that and stick some cathode tubes under the desk with a PSU :D
They're the green and black wires.

Thanks for the info. :)

you mentioned the Danish company audiotechnology is another post which made your custom drivers, two questions, how much do they charge? (if you don't mind me asking. Secondly, is it the same company as Audio-Technica?

Regards, Yanto.

Audio Technica isn't part of Audio Technology.

Drivers were £150 each for the 5" and £300 for the 8".

Why are they so expensive? Are they amazingly loud for 8" speakers?

No they aren't amazingly loud. I wouldn't expect that to be a good indicator of any kind of quality. I can go to a bar and listen to loud speakers, doesn't mean they sound any good though.

Its all about low distortion, dynamics, low level detail, bass extension and all those other words used to describe natural and realistic sound.

Maybe because your not an audio geek its difficult to imagine what £300 buys in terms of a driver but something you will relate to is graphics cards. Its pretty much the same with a high end card; you pay more for the extra performance. So when comparing a £250 card to a £100 card its easy to see what the extra money buys. The same applies for a loudspeaker driver.

That's not so bad then. My custom Celestion's were almost that much.

Yes I thought that when I was inquiring about the costs then after a quick mental calculation realised that all 10 drivers needed to create a full range multi driver speaker would weigh in at £2.2k

Its easily possible to spend much more than that though. You can spend £2.5k on a pair of tweeters if your looking for something with exclusivity reserved for only the most die hard and wealthy DIY'ers. There's always a point of diminishing returns and that sets in fairly quickly once you reach a certain price point, anything above that is either a very small increase in performance or the sound is just different rather than better. A large part of the appeal of these ultra expensive drivers is their exclusive rights of ownership. I cannot afford such an extravagance so instead choose the best engineered drivers at sane prices.

BTW Are your Celestions full range drivers? Hopefully something from the 70's or 80's when they were at their peak unlike now where they seem to following the Chinese with cheaper mass produced stuff. A shame really because Celestion was once one the greats of British audio.

There must be like a wall though were speakers just cant sound any better to human ears? I mean £300 for some 8" speakers to me is just insane, for just £100 I could get a quality Hi-Fi sub, maybe not to you I mean what you build proberbly blows it away in every aspect IMO.

If you can live with something that's cheaper and your as happy with the sound as I am with these, then I think its clear who's laughing :)

Unfortunately I'm jaded and my expectations are very high. Being an enthusiast does that to you. Before building these I auditioned a good number of speakers and I came to the realisation that I just can't live with commercial speakers costing £4k, well I could live with the sound but not the fact that they we're overpriced for the performance on offer. So I knew that the same money put into my own design would be better value.

If we go back to computers again; Since your a PC enthusiast you wouldn't settle for anything below a certain standard. For example you wouldn't play a game running at 20fps and be happy about it. And by the same token you have to spend a fair chunk of money to get something satisfactory but you don't rush off to Dell and buy whatever their XPS system is offering because its poor value compared to your overclocked but better performing machine.

I've just got a couple G12's in an old Vox AC30. Not sure how old they are, the amp itself is pretty old, I'll find out.

The original G12 is an old driver from the good old days. But Celestion revamped and re-released the G12 under the 'Vintage' label and its still a current model today. The new model is less desirable than the older.

The G12 is guitar speaker rather than fullrange.

Well its time I posted my setup don’t usually venture into here, could do with borrowing my dad’s Nikon D200 really but a camera phone will have to do! :D
