Desktop Class vs Enterprise Class Hard Drives.

Hi all.
Im close to purchasing a NAS but have a question regarding the hard drives that go in them.
On one of the NAS manufacturer websites it said that using desktop class (i.e normal pc hardrives) would not be suitable to use in NAS for Raid and that enterprise hard drives should be used.

1: Is this just marketing drivel to get us to spend more money on hard drives or is there some truth to this?

2: If i buy desktop class and use it in my nas with raid, will it be ok?

3: From other peoples experiences - is it worth the extra for the enterprise class?

I use regular "desktop" hard drives and my associate uses business class. He's had two failiures, I've had one. Just luck of the draw really.

Nothing beats a backup!

If it's a ReadyNAS then I would refer to their compatibility list. There are incompatible drives and they decline support if you aren't using a drive from the list.

Otherwise, as above really.
I would say the enterprise class stuff really only comes into it's own in actual server usage where there is constant use for most of the day. For home use where it's going to be much more sporadic, I'd say it isn't worth it.

Synology DS411J, was looking at their page for HDD compatibility when i noticed their little piece.
