Desktop computers becoming a "thing of the past"

It doesn't.

It uses USB which is primarily a computer connection. Out of interest do you get a wall charger with it?

And following that can you just stick your music/photos/video collection on it without using iTunes?;)

yes, and usb wall and car chargers have been around for years.

As it's an apple product unlikely.

But as you could dl all the stuff through itunes from the internet im not sure what you're getting at with that.

anyway, when's the hp slate coming out?

The need for a computer never mind iTunes annoys me. It would be great for my gran to get online but right now it's too much hassle needing to link up to copy stuff to, firmware updates etc.

so you don't have access to any other computers except at the place of study? ;)

Not during the lesson itself, no. I would have been sat around unable to do any work. If the server fails no student or teacher can do any computer based work, even print off assignments, in every GCSE or A level IT lesson no one will be able to do anything because they need the PC to do their coursework.

when we did IT, the teacher had bucket loads of old printouts and tasks etc.

You could all sit down and read some coding books or manuals, or do some work on the board.

pop quizzes, or minor tests, question and answer sessions etc.

If neither you or your teacher can think of something to do without the computer you're both pretty **** at the course really.

fault tolerant infrastructure and good DR strategy costs less in the long run than regular PC replacement. we've got terminals that are a decade old, and cost about 200 quid. a standard PC would have been replaced 3 times in that period and cost rather more each time.

Yeah I know, I have one for my phone... However USB is usually added because the primary charge location is expected to be a computer.

I'm getting at exactly what you said. You need iTunes, which has to run on a computer. The best known tablet is therefore not really a replacement for a computer. Neither are any of the Android slates/tablets, which have almost the same faults (but have a bit more tolerance for adding media from other sources). Full OS tablets don't have the same issue but still run into the other issues I mentioned.

anyway, when's the hp slate coming out?

Is that supposed to be a dig?

If so I'm not too sure, never been that interested in it.... Think it's supposed to be coming out in a few months, although a change of OS has probably delayed it a bit.

It will be many years before tablets are the norm though. So you don't need to worry that a computer is needed now. Give them a few years to mature and you won't.

USB is used more for sync than for chargning in the iPads instance.

Problem is the way tablets are going (from full OS's themselves) to media players and entertainment devices (5 years ago we had most tablets with Win XP on with some, by the likes of Archos, with "mobile" OS, now it's becoming the opposite). That means they will always need computers to sync with if the software stays as restrictive as it is now.

Personally I hope we get rid of the software and stick with the cloud computing idea, with the tablet just being a dead piece of hardware with an internet connection.

I'd like to think as a new platform Apple are restricting things, like the original iPhones lack of apps, then slowly allowing more and more access to the system for developers and end users giving them time to assess any security concerns rather than just releasing 1.0 with access to whatever you want. Like how in Windows in years gone by by default a new user is an Admin. That setup lead to malware all over the place which UAC is now trying to counteract by making developers write apps that can only run as standard users.

No usb is added, because you can charge through it and use it as a data port without having to develop a propriety socket or having 2 ports.

No i just wondered when the hp one was out, is it still win 7 or has it gone android?

My only argument is that I like to sit at the desk and use my pc, don't want some laptop chucking out a bunch of heat sat on the desktop using more power than needed.

Laptops fail for me in the fact that they don't come standard with a 24"+ screen(s). If I want to play games on something small and fiddly I'll buy a DS.

I don't think they'll take over, maybe full blown media centres will.

lol, I doubt it, my laptop heats up to stupid levels when im running something like youtube or BBC iplayer.

Even after a clean install, I doubt it will be able to handle demanding applications without overheating and crashing. Thats a Dual core T3200 @ 2.0Ghz with 2GB RAM.

The main thing is I don't need to dedicate a 1/4 of my room to a desk and monitor and keyboard, chair, tower case etc etc... This is such a huge win.

How small is your room?!

Me entire desk + chair setup is less than 1m in both depth and width, so that would be 1/4 of a 2m by 2m room.

Laptops and tablets may be fine for those who use computers just for mail and surfing the web. Some of us on the other hand need desktops cos we do real work on them. I can't see all this fitting on my lap without a struggle.

And yeah I am a designer who does not use a Mac :-)

I'm completely the opposite. Sitting at a desk and using a PC is a very solitary thing. Its like being at work.

I prefer to sit on the couch while watching TV and browse on my notebook. Which reminds me why an ipad is pointless. It wont stream video.

Now I have a PS3 - I don't use the PC for gaming.
