Afternoon all, I'm in desperate need of a particular requirement.

At the moment, my PC outputs both sound and video to my amp via HDMI. I play this signal through my speakers or plug my HD 595's directly into 1/4" jack. Mmmmm, lovely sound.

But, I'm getting a new desk, and now I'll need a DAC on my desk, but, I'll still be running a HDMI to my amp for when I want to game on the big screen/sound system. Not through my headphones at my desk.

Any way I can accomplish this?

The only saving grace I might have is that when at my desk, my PC is outputting video via DVI, then when on the big screen, steam big picture mode should switch to HDMI. Which I'm hoping will change the audio output as well.

Can you not just use a DAC via optical and switch audio outputs (playback devices) on the PC when/if required?

^This. Just use an optical or coaxial if you PC supports it. I run HDMI from my PC to my T.V along with an optical from the PC to the DAC. I also run an optical from my T.V to my DAC for normal T.V channels and Blu-ray. If you are looking for a cheap DAC with good connectivity the 'Cambridge Audio - DacMagic Plus' which is what i currently use (you can pick up cheap second hand) or for a bit more money an 'Arcam irDAC' both support good connectivity along with 24bit/192kHz USB.
