Desktop Keyboard but like a laptop

Yes is the short answer. Logitech tend to have quite a few different ones amongst other manufacturers. Unfortunately Logitech are no longer stocked at OCUK.

The only decently built backlit is the logitech k740 or k800, and even then its only a white backlight and isn't that bright (we have one downstairs)
The rest are just cheap crap.
Not many companys bother with lights on these types of keyboards.

I have an old Logitech Illuminated Keyboard for work, predecessor of the K740. Really like it. Very nice to type on, very quiet (except space bar). it must be 5 years old by now and never let me down. But it doesn't feel sturdy, so it's not the type keyboard you wail on. Can do gaming all right, but many recent Logitechs have key ghosting issues (by design :().

So yeah, K740 for me. But not for gaming (google K740 Ghosting).

Logitech K810?

I had one. Adjustable backlight which was very bright when turned up. Connects up to and switch between 3 different Bluetooth devices (useful if you have a tablet). Nice shallow chiclet style keys, aluminium build.

Only downside is you need Bluetooth do you have to price in a dongle if you don't have it built in.

The Logitech "Ultra-X" wasn't a bad keyboard for a low profile cheapie one, but not sure if they make them anymore. When I got mine a few years back think they were OEM only as well.

Still using one in the office now - nice and quiet too. Switched to a "proper" mechanical keyboard at home some time ago though. :)

I've seen a compact Cherry keyboard with low profile mechanical switches before as well, but not sure they do a full sized version.

edit: Something like for a standard low profile keyboard? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=KB-014-CH&groupid=702&catid=2705
