I've wanted a mac for YEARS but have just never got around to getting one, I've had a little play with Vista and personaly I feel it's just such I big let down, I'm not impressed by it at all, I've now got a real yerning to get myself a mac but my funds are very limited, I still want to keep my pc for gaming but use the mac for surfing, emails, and playing music and dvd's etc, I can just stretch for a new mac mini, the £399 version, whats worrying me is that I hear a lot of people saying that you really need 1gig memory to run OS X properly, is this true ?, would a mac mini be powerfull enough for the for the activities I listed above, also it will be used with a dell 2407 @ 1920x1200, will it handle that resolution alright ?

thankyou

em yeah 1 gig would be better than 512 but you can always upgrade later,
yeah it should really handle that res no both like

It should be able to handle everything you want to do with it. 1GB of memory is recommended, you not notice any slow down with that. As for the graphics the integrated Intel GPU is no slouch and should be able to run the resolution you require. :D

My Mini was borderline painful with 512. I just wouldn't bother with half a gig if it's your first Mac, it'll put you off them for life! I got mine because I've used them at work for a few years, now I'm not in that job I started missing Mac OS, so I knew it'd be fine with more RAM, but seriously it did my head in before I put 2gig in. (I wanted 2 gig for Photoshop stuff, 1gig will be fine for normal stuff and probably good enough to be quickish in PS).

They're awesome little machines though. I only switch my Windows box on to play games since I got it.

It also depends on whether he's ordered anything from the Apple HE store this year also. I've already had one Mini and want another one, but I can't until September...

If money is tight, how about going second hand, or check on eBay? Make sure its an Intel CPU.

Have you looked at how much Apple hardware goes for second hand on Ebay?

Are you sure about that? I ordered 2 MacBooks and a Mini all within 12 months of each other.
