These are a couple of days old but I haven't seen them posted yet...

From Toms Hardware: http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/10/29/intel_penryn_4ghz_with_air_cooling/index.html

Oh dear AMD... the new Core2's are 45% faster. Phenom has no chance at the speeds it's due to be released at, even when overclocked I suspect http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2007/11/02/phenom-slowed-again

Penryn shows average of 7% speed increase clock for clock over the "old" Core2's.

I'll be picking one up in Q1 '08. :)

775, most boards will support with BIOS updates. I know a lot of the Asus P5 range will.

I thought it was just the Extreme out in Q1?

weescott what board do you recomend to use with this cpu m8?

Just get the Maximus Formula clone, 'cos no dought you will be getting Nehalem when it comes out.

A DDR3 board like the Maximus Extreme or Asus P5E3 will give you better performace but you will just end up spending more money on better DDR3 memory when it appears.

May aswell just stick with DDR2 and just get the best board you can buy with all that money of yours. :D

I have to say the Asus Maximus Formula is top quality board. I get the cold boot issue that I had with the P5k Deluxe now and again. The bios still needs some work done to it, it overvolts the ram by .004 / .008v, there is a little Vrop and V droop, even with loadline calibration on. But apart from that its been a great board so far.

I'd be very tempted to wait for x48/790i tbh. Then again if you are going for a QX chip fsb limitations don't really come into it.

I may wait but im not really sure what to do about the board and ram x38 0r x48 DD2 or DDR3

Well thinking about it if you do go for the QX9650 clone, then its just a choice if you wanted to go SLI, Crossfire or stick with one card.

As w3bbo said fsb limitations wont really matter if you get the QX chip that much.

If you wanted to go SLI with 8800GT or Tri SLI with GTX then you could just opt for the cheapest 680i or 780i/790i board when they arrive as you wouldnt have to worry about the fsb because of the unlocked multi on the QX9650.

If you only wanted one card then you may aswell get a cheap P35 board like the Abit IP-35 Pro. Very good board for overclocking, nice and stable if you decent to overclock it without uping the multi much etc and it is cheap. Would be better than a 680i board if you decided to use a single card.

You get my drift?

But I would defianalty go DDR2.

Well, at least it'll probably bring prices down a bit for good CPUs in the low end which i build rigs in quite often, but as i suspected, a no-go.

And we all know that AMD will be running around saying "native, native" all the time.

Think i`ll have to sell my laptop to fund this build :D
Would like to go DDR3 tbh and x3/x48 and a single card may get a GT for now and 9800gtx when they come out.

Why is it I now how have the image of a load of pygmies in the jungle knocking out AMD chips.....

Looks like an amazing chip. The idle wattage is stunning. Can't wait to get my hands on one of these :)

45% faster? I suspect a fairer test may have been between an FX-74 setup and the new Penryn... 4 vs 2 cores is not really going to be a useful comparison.

There is no doubt that Penryn is a lot faster than K8 architecture...

I just wonder if X48 will be sold at a premium since some x38 brands gaurantee to run at X48 spec. 790i is pretty much just 680i, and judging by the amount of issues I, and indeed many other had with 680i, I would be inclined to go X38 if you want to overclock.

The only reason I am keeping my 2 8800GTX's is for Skulltrail, and thats whole different kettle of fish.
