Anyone suggesting the OP discharge a firearm/shotgun in an urban setting and nearby other houses needs their head examining (and their licences revoked if they have any).

From Google :

Q. What can I do to deter foxes from entering or digging in my garden?

A: There are a wide variety of techniques available: for advice contact The Fox Project (tel. 01892 826222)

There you go.

They're into marking their territory. Your own pee will possibly deter them.

This is true. I pee around my garden (when it is dark) regularly to deter cats and foxes. Autumn is particularly important for foxes as this is when they are establishing territories.

I tried the sonic jobbies that have sensors to go off when the beam is broken but it only lasts a couple of weeks until they are use to it.

I have heard of the marking your territory theory too. I have a problem with cats pooping on my grass. The bset deterrent for that is get your own cat but as I live alone, that's not really an option. Sprinkle pepper liberally around the edges of the garden, that works a treat but be careful. You might get rid of the foxes but you don't want sneezing tortoises!

I have a major issue with foxes in my area, they seem to like congregating in my garden and dropping turds all over the place, very annoying - not to mention the noise they like making at 4am. Have tried all sorts of deterrents but to no avail :(.

Sparkler bomb hooked with magnesium strip and electronic trip trigger.

They wont come back :D, either that or they'll be in bits or be deafened for life.
