The greatest game of all time? It seems surprisingly informative about the future too, for its time.

Never really got in to Deus Ex: Human Revolution. The fact every one you walk up to is banging on about getting mechanically augmented detracts from the realism that should have been in DX:HR.

In Deus Ex 1 many characters offer an opinion about globalisation and their long lost rights under the US constitution and democracy, drug addiction, healthcare, and income inequality, while living out their days homeless with the Grey Death. The Aquinas internet surveillance also paralleled the Snowden revelations that weren't to come for more than 10 years later.

All that compelling narrative was entirely missing from my brief play of Human Revolution. Also, no one in Deus Ex 1 gave a damn about augmentations outside of UNATCO, except those discussing it as we might now (not way after it's become widespread as per HR).

The AI of Deus Ex 1 was atrocious, as was the engine when I first played it in the year 2000, which brought my PC to it's knees while Half Life 1 was running like a dream. That aside, any other big fans of Deus Ex 1, to the exclusion of its sequels?

I suspect that 'down' was the only authorised narrative. Kinda odd that transhuman issues appeared in movies and games like Deus Ex: HR around the same time. Especially odd that they made sure it eclipsed every subtlety relevant to the real world that the first game brought to our attention.

100% with you that the first was a classic. Still unmatched today.

One of my favourite games and one of the few games I've replayed multiple times. HR is a pretty good game in its own right but a shadow of a Deus Ex game - some of the ambience though somewhat makes up for it ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67IuaDiC0LI ). IW was badly let down by the console focus in development or otherwise would have been a good effort.

I really can't get into Mankind Divided - just too much of it is too clunky and story wise doesn't really interest me as much as a DX game - it has edged too much towards style over substance.

What I didn't realise for a long time though is what they were really trying to go for with the original game and I'd love to see a remake that lived upto the original vision (especially fleshing out how everything was under quarantine controls and martial law while still being a populated and living environment) as well as fleshing out the frontier and possibly moon base (not entirely sold on that one) sections that were cut from the game.

This is probably my favourite game of all time, if not it is certainly in the top 3. Although I enjoyed all the deus ex games, I agree with your points that the original is on another level. Much better narrative and immersion.

The lady that did the writing for DE:HR & MD sadly could not match the quality of the original. HR was ok, but she really dropped the ball on MD. I really hope when they eventually come back to this game they hire a new lead writer that understands what made the original so special.

They should also move away from Adam Jensen. As much as I liked him, I feel they messed things up too much with DE:MD for them to recover and get good sales for a game with him in it again.

Would love to see the original remade with the latest graphics. But I know it would get horrible reviews due to the developers inevitably seriously dumbing it down. All I would want is latest graphics, improved ai, more secret extra secrets to discover and small additions to areas to make it a bit more fresh for those of us who have played it many times to have something new. Basically think of Resident Evil Remake, which was done right for a remake.

I can't get into this. The controls, graphics, presentation is too clunky for me. I've tried it lots of times, usually I go for the stealthy option, I use a tranquiliser dart on someone, they flip and and run around notifying all the guards, I get annoyed and quit.

I suspect it's a little like me and Mafia (1) where everyone else will shout at me and tell me its controls are crap, it's too hard, the car physics are inaccessible but all those things don't bother me in the slightest (I actually really like the car physics) because I played it years ago. It is my favourite game of all time.

Great, great game. I highly recommend trying it out nowadays with the GMDX mod. Probably the best mod I've played where Deus Ex is concerned.

And as for the foretelling of future events, I remember thinking exactly the same for some time during and after playing the campaign. Other games, before and since, have evoked a similar response but not in the same manner as DX1.

I did enjoy HR quite a lot though I didn't find it to be a great game like the first. Still, you could say that it had a lot to live up to. As for MD, I've only played a little of it though no doubt I will complete it at a later date.

Remap keys, use GMDX mod (eyes will get used to graphics after you get into the game) and don’t play stealthy. Problem fixed :D

I never play stealthy, now way near as fun for me.

Annoyingly I can't remember the mod I used but there is one that updates the abilities and how you use them keys wise to a more modern implementation without actually changing the balance ingame which makes it far more playable - also making liberal use of the inventory tricks to store more stuff and to get more use out of tools/picks, etc. vastly improves the experience without taking anything away from the original game (unless you are a real sucker for hardcore). The original game can be a bit clunky but I still find it a lot more playable in that respect than MD though I don't recall having any concerns like that with HR.

Indeed. I remember the conversation you had with Morpheus AI at Dr Everetts house talking about surveillence. Strangely prophetic given how many tools and rescources there are monitoring us now for a game made in 2000. The dystopian enviroment on the whole was so believable and logical even as a kid I thought that's how the future might be, and still do on some points.

I found it interesting that some of the developers were obviously thinking a long way ahead with things in the game "how would someone find this playing the game in 10 years time" with some of the little "issues" probably not being actual bugs at all as once you've played a few times they are handy for making the game more convenient once the novelty has worn off on the other hand if you watch the play through with Warren Spector, etc. they comment a lot on how things have dated, etc. badly heh.

The deus ex bible is a good read if you want a refresher on the story without having to actually replay the game. Very interesting read

I don't think I ever completed it, I know I got to Area 51. But it is certainly burnt into my brain. Green greasy greasels n' all.

I've never completed it either even though it's one of my top games of all time. I always run out of steam when I get around the Paris/Area 51 mark, seems to take a big dive in quality in terms of level design. The early game is just so good though, it's a shame they couldn't keep the pace up for the whole thing. Even back then I guess there were deadlines that needed to be met.

This thread makes me nostalgic and a little bit sad. I absolutely loved this game when it came out and I was a young pup. It prompted me to do fan fictions, read so much in the genre etc

Then the twin towers happened and it feels like ever since then its actually become a part of reality. Everything and everyone is a lot more cynical and mistrusting.
