Deus Ex 3

It's not about hardware performance, it's about target audience. Marketing and demographics.
Hardware performance is part of it. It never was the main issue, but it did make a difference. If DX2 was made PC only, the levels would have probably been larger and more open, more like the original.

The fact of the matter is that the vast majority of console games are designed to be easy to get into, with a short learning curve and a lack of depth and complexity (I'm not saying this is neccesarily a bad thing, I like a mindless shooter or a driving game as much as the next guy too).

My only real ray of hope is that bioshock (a very in-depth and complex RPG by console standards) was well recieved on all platforms. If other developers take note and attempt to follow suit, things could look up for DX3 and similar games. I aint holding my breath though.
I think developers are starting to realise that there is a market for more complex, in depth games on consoles. Bioshock is a good example of that.

i think bioshock is an example of the negative effect of consoles on first person gaming my self. its old news now and its been said so much, but bioshock could have been massive but it ended up being very linear with no freedom in the storyline at all. not at all what it should have been. thats not to say it was a bad game but it wasnt the cross-genre rpg shooter that we'd hoped. infact it was far more linear next to ssII than deus ex 2 was next to the original.

I agree with what you're saying in /re to how BioShock turned out.. but it's also true that if you hold it in the light of console shooters, it was very deep/etc. Whilst I was personally dissapointed with it, I do hope that it helps improve the quality of consoles games in the future.

DX is one of the best games ive ever played.
DX2 wasnt as good, but was still better than most games that were out at the time.

DX3, im just hoping its not well and truely messed up.

did i blink and bioshock turned into a complicated game? In my eyes that game was similar to dx2, pretty maybe, but much simplier than it could have been

The problem with consoles will always be the controls, you cant cram 30 odd buttons of a keyboard onto a pad.. which kills off your inventory system, and your biomod system (no point getting them if you can only have 2 online at the same time)

it doesnt kill any othing off. you cant have a million controls at your finger tips but you can do a couple of menus very easily.

what kills off the gaming is the target audience, not the controls.
