Lo all,

I'm looking to get into another FPS after completing COD4 in record time. (Single player is really short even on difficult).

I looked on Steam and I can either get Deus Ex 1&2 or S.T.A.L.K.E.R for $20

Which would you go for and why?

Cheers

Deus Ex. STALKER is incredibly overrated, leave it till last on your list. Deus Ex is one of the best games to have ever come out on PC, it stands the test of time very well.

Deus Ex 1 & 2 as you will be getting more gameplay for your money (over 40hrs at least).

Both games had me hooked until I completed them, whereas STALKER has sat untouched for a while early in the game.

deus ex was amazing at its time but not sure it would be so good now so many years have passed...if you can look past the very dated graphics then there is fun to be had otherwise stalker still is a great game.

Maybe get the updated graphics pack for deus ex if you find the dated graphics a problem. Personally I don't think they're all that bad. Use of textures and lighting are excellent, the only problem is the obvious necessity for low poly models back then. Apart from that though it's an excellent excellent game. I think I may have to go back and reinstall it after thinking about it again. btw first game I saw with real time reflections. The floor in your main office reception =)

I played Deus Ex for the first time in 2004 and thought it was great (although I suppose that is about 4 years ago now!). Graphically it looked fine with tweaked settings like most UT engine games.

The only downside really is the UI/inventory screen which felt a bit clunky, oversized and dated compared to the sequel. Not enough to deter from the gameplay though. Textures are bland as one would expect from the days of 32meg cards but again, it is characterisation, storyline and level design which make environments come to life as much as flashy gfx. The Hong Kong level has as much atmosphere as most of your modern day shooters.

Where can i find these texture packs you talk about?

I'm sure you've already made up your mind but here's another vote for Deus Ex

Stalker is good but Deus Ex is simply one of the best, if not the best games of all time IMO. Kept me hooked from beginning to end. Fantastic

I enjoyed Stalker but it didn't really grab me and it's just been left on the shelf

Deus Ex 2, well, it's OK. Fairly average in its own right but it's not much in comparison to the first IMO
