Deus Ex problem

I got Deus Ex off steam last night. I used to have it when it iriginally came out and thought it was amazing but never completed it. So I decided I would have another go at it 8 years on.

Everything seems to work perfectly, except that when in conversations, whether it is the scientist in my HUD talking to me, or when in a cinematic conversation, or normal in game set pieces of speech, I am having an issue where it cuts off their speech in the middle of their sentence, and it keeps happening throughout each person's sentence. I have patched the game etc. I have a good PC which is only about 2 years old.

Also it almost seems like there is a slight bug where when I am running, suddenly he starts to randomly run really fast for little moments of the floor.

It is like something is randomly rushing the game along at moments.

Any ideas?

Not sure what the speech issue is but on the if you have a CD copy of the game it does get confused by AMD Cool and Quite (and possible Intel Speedstep). Basically the Cool and Quite seem to make the Deus Ex think you've got a lot slower processor then you have and so when the game starts and processor runs at full speed, the game engine seem to run at double the intended speed. To stop this i had to disable Cool and Quite, this may help you.

How do I disable cool and quiet if I have it? where abouts do I find the settings?

for a game like Deus Ex, should I disable my graphics SLI performance to use just one card?

Solving the cool and quiet issue is easy. Go to power options in the control panel and unde the power schemes turn the setting to desktop as cool n quite only works if you have your power scheme as laptop.

I had that problem with my audigy 2 and I fixed it by just installing the drivers that came with it (the ones on the CD)

Apologies for bumping this thread, but it's probably more effective than making a new one for a similar issue. I've just reinstalled Deus Ex (think I've given up on level 55 in CoD4) but it seems to be stuck in 640x480. Changing it up to 1280x1024 registers in the options, but it doesn't affect the size of the menu or HUD - iirc, when upping the resolution, both the menu and HUD appeared smaller on screen, right? Or am I going mad?

Took me lots of tries to install it this time, actually, kept getting bizarre errors, then it would load to the point where the menu should appear, but not display the menu, just the rotating logos. Fixed that now, though, just got to puzzle out this graphics thing. Using the updated rendered linked above, tried the first release of the texture pack also, but nothing has changed. It's not set in compatability mode or anything like that, so I'm stumped.

Check the OSD on your monitor, that will tell you what resolution the game is running in. Failing that you should be able to edit the .ini files to force your chosen resolution as it uses the Unreal engine (fullscreenviewport X and Y, something like that).

iirc - the menus and HUD don't scale with the resolution past a certain resolution, like 800x600 or 1024x768....after that they stay the same size...

OSD, that's what I get when I press a button on the side of it? I ask this because since about a week after getting the monitor, pressing any button other than 'on/off' gives me a message on screen saying 'OSD LOCKED'. Never actually figured out what that was meant to be. I'll look into this though, and the forcing of a resolution.

Interesting, I'll have a play with this.

There's a patch or edit or something avaliable to make them scale... Have a google.

Will do - any idea of a name or anything to go on? I'm going to hit Fileplanet and Planet Deus Ex (if that site still exists) and go through their list of patches, but there could be a lot of them. On the other hand, there might not be. :o

Aha, Munky there was correct, it doesn't seem to scale at 1280x1024. Scales at damned near everything else, though, it just looks a little squished on some options (I suspect they're widescreen modes). At 1152x864, it's scaled and looks fine. Can't believe I've never had or never noticed this problem before, I've played this game loads of times. Only problem now is some annoying clipping distortion on the sound, though I suspect this is due to a loose connection somewhere in the headphones, it's been doing it for a while.

Thanks for the help guys, and apologies for stealing the OPs thread. :p

Did you find it? If not I can upload the file?

No, I never found it, but I've got the game running fine at 1152x864, and it scales fine at that resolution. It just doesn't like 1280x1024. No great loss, 1152x864 is perfectly playable. Thanks for the offer, but it's running fine now, so there's no need for you to go to any trouble. :)
