Developer "threatens" to kill Gabe Newell - has game pulled from Steam

The bigger concern for me is that Valve are becoming more and more the gatekeeper and nobody seems to care.

An entire industry should not be dependent on a single entity to define their success/failure.

**STUPID ANALOGY ALERT**

Boss of Kellogs tells the boss of ASDA to "go **** yourself".

Boss of Asda will not say "We are not selling your products ever again" because they know, their products will sell in the same numbers elsewhere and a percentage of sales will go elsewhere.

PC gaming is heavily dependent on Steam and Valve know this.

Another point, the developer chose to use Steamworks for the game. At this time, Valve are still allowing keys to be redeemed on Steam, they have simply removed the Store page, just like they did with Postal 3.

Lombardi says they have ceased relations but at this time, keys are still redeemable. If Steam remove that, the game is unplayable in its current form.

Do Valve contracts stipulate that death threats made to Gabe will result in instant termination?

I don't get the reasoning behind Maulbeck's tantrum at all. So it was mislabled, and? It gets corrected and the customers will just start buying it a day or two later. So what?

A large number of people look at the banner for new releases thus maximizing day 1 sales which to the industry are VERY important.

On this occasion, it said "Early Access" which would cause most people to "skip it" when it was infact "Gold".

History dictates that Valve rarely, if ever, would help with regards to extending time on the front page/banner to compensate for this.

I really don't get how anyone can defend this guy. Steam is pretty much life or death for the project he has been working on for years. He chose steam to work with. Steam mislabeled his game. In what world is the correct course of action to call the people who will correct it incompetent on social media and badmouth(and threaten, though that is obviously blown out of proportion) the guy who runs it?

Edit- And he says he has since told them he didn't mean it...Well great but this wasn't said in a private conversation. He broadcasted it on Twitter, a place where anyone in the world can see it and magnify it even more!

Probably just a couple of throwaway lines saying something like "Steam reserves the right to remove your intellectual property from the store at any time."

Being the best service available isn't a monopoly though.

If Desure or GOG or Origin or Uplay want to try and do things better then they can.

Different services suit different people.

I have appreciated Steam for many years since I got Half Life 2.

Since I have grown up and had kids who want to play my library of games, Steam has made it a pain in the *** compared to having a library of DVD's my kids can just browse and install/play as they wish.

Gimpymoo - It's vaguely Ironic that you have a signature picture that links to your steam account.

Ironic

adjective

Happening in a way contrary to what is expected, and typically causing wry amusement because of this.

If that creates amusement for you, there are many others on here with similiar signature templates. Fill yer boots :)

Personally I think Steam are better than ever.

I recently did the family/friend sharing thing and friends can now play any game I own as long as I'm not playing it at the same time, and vice versa (Though I have a lot more games than they do)

Also Big Picture mode is great.

Origins Customer service is better though.

idiot developer or marketing genius?

wouldn't have even looked twice at this game.

could work well for him. if hes only got one game in him.could do very well. sell it by other means horror game and halloween approaching. without this who would have brought it ?

It actually reads like a stress related blowout, but he obviously needs to be missing a screw or two to take it as far as he did. But like someone else mentioned, this publicity will do him favours because more people will take note of it. Personally I wouldn't even bat an eyelid at this type of game.

If you watch the Indie Game movie, you see how stressed the guys can get. I guess it was something similar here, but threatening somebody on Twitter really is another level.

Stress related blowout where you vent to a few mates over many beers down the pub is one thing.

Publicly threatening a business partner is another.

Steam must have a contact number that developers/publishers can use to point out errors on the Steam Store and get them resolved ASAP.

Games development is incredibly stressful. He just seems a bit young, I think valve should have been the "bigger man" and down played it. Pretty disappointing how they reacted if I'm honest.
