Announced just moments ago at Capcom's pre-TGS press conference, here's just about everything we know about Ninja Theory's "reboot" of Devil May Cry: a trailer. Found after the break, this trailer (and the accompanying screens and artwork) share a new look for Dante, and a new direction for the franchise. Let's make this scientific, though. What do you think of the Devil May Cry reboot?

Joystiq

Quite honestly, I DO NOT like it! What the hell was Capcom thinking?

I mean sure, the series did get a little stale and silly with DMC4 (Nero? Pffft!), even though I enjoyed that game a lot, but to reboot the series like this, it's a huge slap in the face to the series' legacy.

Did Capcom get intimidated by Platinum Game's Bayonetta that a reboot was the only option to refresh the series?

Oh well I guess at least there is Tecmo Koei's upcoming Ninja Gaiden 3.

The **** are you talking about?

It's Dante - only he's had a haircut.

Have to agree, whats the problem?

Well for starters if we judge by this trailer alone, this a completely different Dante to an already established one.

He's only had a haircut? Then why is it black? The silver/white hair of the original (Including Vergil and Nero) is an established Japanese design trait known for Demonic characters since birth.

And most important of all, did Dante ever smoke? I sure as hell did not remember this and it was one very important aspect that even the original designers set out.

If this is supposed to be say, a younger Dante, then they would have totally forgotten about the third game in the series where he already was very young.

So yeah, seeing this new reboot version, I can really say that I do not like it at all. This Dante is a huge contrast to the original. He looks like some angry, broody Twilight-ish character and with a voice that doesn't match (But then this is a reboot right!). Sure the game itself might be good, but for the character himself which I probably should have pointed out in my opening post, it is a huge slap to the original.

At least he is still in Marvel vs Capcom 3.

Proves how mature you are.

If you got nothing constructive to say, don't bother.

Dante looks turd for one yes they want him to look younger but still.

Younger with a grown man's deep voice. Yeah that pretty much explains it all. Unless it is the voice actor is doing adult Dante and he is narrating about this younger life, which is what the game may be about.

But as I talked about before, I really do not like the change in his character at all. Reboots do tend to ruin a few things.

Yeah early indeed, so we'll have to see what else will be revealed.

I will say though, that I do like the architecture of the buildings, at least that stays true to the original DMC games. Although like many games of this generation, too much "sunlight brown".

DmC: Devil May Cry to utilize Unreal Engine

No surprise this would be the choice since Ninja Theory recently worked on Enslaved which also used it, and I can see some good merits from this i.e. gritty look for the gothic environments. But as well because of this, you could already get a sense that the overall combat and performance will be different. Since this is a new direction, most likely this time around, this game might be limited to 30fps as opposed to the speedy 60fps nature of the previous 4 games. It would seem to match well with the Westernised combat mechanics unless the developers decide to suprise us.

Of course it does most games that have used the unreal engine have turned out good. Also games using the unreal engine haven't all been 30 frames have they?

Yeah it looks like you have no idea what I am on about. Let me try to elaborate.

What I am trying to say is can the consistant 60fps fast-paced twitch-combat and gameplay mechanics of the previous Devil May Cry games be fully replicated on the Unreal 3 Engine?

Whilst there have been a few action platformer oriented games on the Unreal 3 Engine before, I don't think there were any that is on the same gameplay and mechanical calibur of a Devil May Cry game.

And because this will be a new game made by Ninja Theory, with a new direction for the series, it would come as no surprise that combat and overall speed of the game will be different, and the engine that they will use (Unreal 3) is partly to dictate that.

So this new game may have to be limited to running at 30fps as opposed to the older games which were all 60fps, which I think is a significant change that would impact the overall combat system and gameplay speed.

Oh and the majority of Unreal 3 Engine powered games generally run 30fps or lower on the Console systems. On the PC that's a different matter.

I cant remember where i read it, but generally the Unreal 3 engine doesnt run as optimally on PS3 compared to 360, So any game that does come out on the engine will POSSIBLY suffer on 1 console over the other.

I thought Unreal Tournament 3 ran pretty well on the PS3, though this one did come out before the 360 version.
